In Episode 4 of The Last of Us Season 2, entitled “Day One,” we start off with a chilling memory from the past. This week’s installment transports us to the turbulent history of the city, where ongoing violence from yesterday still echoes in today.
11 years before the main plot unfolds, we meet Isaac (Jeffrey Wright), a former FEDRA soldier who has grown cold-hearted. He decides to defect and joins the Washington Liberation Front in a dramatic sequence. The prologue illustrates Isaac’s brutal tactics and introduces the ongoing conflict between the Seraphites and the W.L.F., setting the stage for a persistent war.
In the present worldline, characters Ellie (portrayed by Bella Ramsey) and Dina (played by Isabela Merced) explore a post-apocalyptic Seattle. Moments of tranquility, such as Ellie’s soothing rendition of Take on Me and Dina’s heartfelt reaction, create a surprising sense of comfort in the coldness. However, their bond starts to unravel as they face growing danger together.
Midway through the show, Isaac makes an appearance, portrayed as harshly interrogating a captive Seraphite for details. This intense segment delves into moral ambiguity and the perpetual nature of war. The episode ends with Isaac executing the defiant prisoner, a moment that hints at his upcoming mental deterioration.
Simultaneously, Ellie and Dina encounter a shocking sight at a deserted W.L.F. radio station. The climactic action scene unfolds, as they battle against wolves in order to escape from a forsaken tunnel.
After a hasty escape, Ellie gets bit but survives. Later, she passes on her immunity to Dina, who subsequently discloses that she’s expecting. They both experience a sense of relief and a tender moment, yet the course of their future remains uncertain.
