The Last of Us S2 Director Mark Mylod Reveals Joel’s Death Scene Left Him in Tears: ‘I Just Couldn’t Talk’

During an interview with a media outlet, Craig Mazin shared that he aimed to have Adam McKay serve as director for the upcoming episodes of the show, having been impressed by McKay’s work in the Emmy-winning series “Succession.

Regarding our earlier conversation, the showrunner mentioned that they had aimed to include Mark in the first season of The Last of Us, but at that time, he was engaged with Succession.

Later on, Mazin remarked, “He made a real blunder next. Mark was participating in one of those [For Your Consideration Emmy campaign] discussions since Succession was expected to sweep all awards. The question posed to all the directors was, ‘If you could collaborate with anyone, who would it be?’ To which he replied, ‘Craig Mazin.’ I then sent him a message, ‘You messed up.’

To prevent both the showrunner and viewers from experiencing any regrets, Mylod skillfully directed one of the most exceptional episodes in the series. During a conversation about episode 2, the director even expressed his own emotional response to one particular scene that left him in tears.

The director went on to explain, “The high-angle shot aimed to transcend the constraints of cinematic conventions, leading us to a destination that felt conclusive, harsh, and emotionally poignant as it underscored the character’s desperate longing for that last, vital touch.
