The ongoing creative changes for HBO’s “The Last of Us” are persisting, as it was recently disclosed that Halley Gross will no longer be part of the show.
In an Instagram post, Gross, known for her work as a writer and producer on the popular show and co-author of “The Last of Us Part II” video game with Neil Druckmann, announced that she’s taking a step back to focus on fresh projects, which is also the reason given by Drukmann.
As a passionate film enthusiast, I’ve chosen to momentarily step aside from my daily duties on HBO’s “The Last of Us” series. This move is to prepare for the exciting opportunities that await me next. I can’t express enough gratitude for the exceptional journey this project has provided. Collaborating with Neil, Craig, HBO, and an extraordinary cast and crew has been nothing short of life-altering. The tales we wove—of love, loss, and the essence of humanity in a harsh world—are precisely why I’m captivated by this franchise.
I’m excited about the fantastic projects I’ll soon be revealing, but before that, I’d like to convey my heartfelt thanks to everyone who so carefully breathed life into the world of Ellie and Joel.
Neil Druckmann commented on her post, writing:
“The game and the show owe much of their success to you. Keep slaying!”
Gross is also known for Westworld and the Batman: Caped Crusader animated series.

Two Big Exits Raise Questions About Season 3
As a movie enthusiast penning down my thoughts, I find myself grappling with the latest developments surrounding the popular franchise. The departure of Bruce Gross comes hot on the heels of Neil Druckmann’s exit from his creative role for Season 3. This double departure by two pillars of the franchise’s storytelling leaves me pondering about the direction the show might take in the future.
Season 3 is likely to carry on interpreting “The Last of Us Part II,” with a focus on Kaitlyn Dever’s character, Abby. However, the degree to which the series aligns with the game remains uncertain, given that Gross and Druckmann are no longer directly involved in the project.
Showrunner Craig Mazin remains in charge of the series.
Creative changes follow controversy
In the wake of their departures, it’s been noted that the audience for “The Last of Us” has been dwindling due to several factors. One major issue seems to be the series adapting the same narrative as the game, which didn’t sit well with many fans, particularly the untimely death of Joel, played by Pedro Pascal. Additionally, the flashback episode in Season 2 appears to have significantly altered the character of Joel for viewers.
