As a huge fan of The Hunger Games, I was thrilled to finally see the first teaser trailer for Sunrise on the Reaping! Lionsgate just dropped it, and it gives us our very first glimpse of this new prequel film, which is set to come out in 2026. I’m already so excited!
This story takes us back to the 50th Hunger Games—also called the Second Quarter Quell—and follows a young Haymitch Abernathy as he fights for survival in the deadly arena.
The film hits theaters and IMAX on November 20, 2026.

Returning Director, Familiar Tone
Francis Lawrence, who directed previous Hunger Games movies, is back as director. The script was written by Billy Ray, and Nina Jacobson and Brad Simpson produced the film. This installment is based on Suzanne Collins’ 2024 book and delves into the political complexities and the personal costs of Haymitch’s win.
Cast and Characters
The cast of the upcoming film includes Joseph Zada as Haymitch Abernathy, Elle Fanning as Effie Trinket, and Jesse Plemons as Plutarch Heavensbee. Mckenna Grace plays Maysilee Donner, and Maya Hawke is Wiress. Ralph Fiennes returns as President Snow, alongside Laura Marcus as Silka Sharp and Glenn Close as Drusilla Sickle. Kieran Culkin will portray Caesar Flickerman, with Ben Wang as Wyatt Callow. Lili Taylor is Mags Flanagan, Jefferson White plays Mr. McCoy, and Iris Apatow appears as Proserpina. Whitney Peak plays Lenore Dove Baird, Haymitch’s girlfriend, while Billy Porter is Magno Stift, Kelvin Harrison Jr. is Beetee Latier, Edvin Ryding plays Vitus, and Kara Tointon completes the cast as Willamae.
Franchise Continues to Grow
This is the sixth movie in the Hunger Games series, a franchise that has made over $3.3 billion worldwide. The new film explores the history of Haymitch Abernathy, adding more depth to the world of Panem and revisiting the core ideas of fighting to survive, who holds the power, and resisting that power.
