As a dedicated fan of psychological thrillers who’s seen my fair share of suspenseful tales, I can confidently say that Lionsgate’s upcoming movie, “The Housemaid,” is shaping up to be a must-watch for any thriller enthusiast. The cast alone, with Sydney Sweeney and Amanda Seyfried at the helm, promises an intriguing blend of complexity and mystery that I can hardly wait to unravel.
In a holiday treat for moviegoers, Lionsgate is set to release a chilling psychological thriller titled “The Housemaid” in theaters this Christmas 2025. Adapted from Freida McFadden’s acclaimed novel, the film will premiere on December 25th. Its intriguing plot and star-studded cast have already garnered buzz in the industry.
In this new role, Sydney Sweeney portrays Millie, a young woman seeking to restart her life by accepting a position as a housemaid for the wealthy pair, Nina (played by Amanda Seyfried) and Andrew. However, Millie’s new beginning takes an ominous twist when she stumbles upon perilous secrets concealed by her employers. Additionally, Michele Morrone, known for his work in “365 Days,” joins the cast, though specifics about his character remain undisclosed.
The upcoming movie is being directed by Paul Feig, known for films like “A Simple Favor” and “Bridesmaids.” The script has been penned by Rebecca Sonnenshine. Paul Feig, together with Todd Lieberman, Laura Fischer, and Carly Kleinbart Elter, are producing the film. Sweeney, Seyfried, McFadden, and Alex Young have joined as executive producers.
Lionsgate intends to premiere the film titled “The Housemaid” alongside major holiday films such as James Cameron’s Avatar: Fire & Ash and Paramount’s The SpongeBob Movie: Search for Squarepants. Although it faces stiff competition, the studio is confident that the movie’s suspenseful, character-focused plot will resonate with female viewers during the holiday period.
In 2022, Frieda McFadden’s novel shot to the top of the New York Times Best Sellers list, with sales exceeding one million copies. This literary success sparked follow-up novels such as “The Housemaid’s Secret“.
Erin Westerman, a co-president at Lionsgate Motion Picture Group, highly complimented Sweeney and Seyfried by stating they were “spot-on” for their respective roles due to their skill in depicting intricate and enigmatic characters.
Boasting a star-studded lineup, a seasoned filmmaker, and a widely acclaimed novel as its foundation, Lionsgate anticipates that The Housemaid will shine amidst the crowded holiday movie season, providing the same thrill and emotional depth that captivated readers of the book.
