As a devoted fan who has followed The Handmaid’s Tale since its inception, it’s with a heavy heart that I bid farewell to this captivating series and the remarkable performances of its actors, particularly Yvonne Strahovski as Serena Joy Waterford. Seven years is a long time to invest in a character and her journey, and it’s bittersweet to see it come to an end.
After six captivating seasons, The Handmaid’s Tale – a series inspired by Margaret Atwood’s novel of the same name – is drawing to a close, but Yvonne Strahovski finds it hard to bid farewell. Throughout its run since 2017, the show garnered an impressive 76 nominations and took home 15 Emmy Awards.
The story centers on June Osborne, portrayed by Elisabeth Moss, who is compelled to work as a handmaid for a dominant, affluent Commander. Strahovski, the actress behind Serena Joy, the Commander’s wife, spoke about filming the last season of the show on the Bingeworthy podcast.
Although she believes it’s the right time to bid adieu, she admitted it was emotional.
Reflecting on her feelings during the last season, she reminisced about the intricate character she played throughout the series, saying “At first, it felt like uncharted waters. There were moments when I struggled to defend her life choices.
Over time, she dedicated considerable effort to comprehending her character, and as the years passed, it became increasingly natural for her to portray her. As I’ve grown more familiar with her, it feels like a second nature now. However, saying goodbye is both sweet and bitter, she remarked.
Despite understanding that the conclusion is imminent, she’s eager to retire the character and create room for fresh experiences in her life. She aspires to bid farewell to Serena while maintaining the enthusiasm she has kindled.
She noted that playing the same character for years requires an actor to make space for it in their subconscious so they can revisit it when needed. Therefore, letting go of Serena would be “liberating” and would call for a new beginning.
For seven years now, Strahovski has been bringing the complex and unpredictable character to life on screen. While Serena may not possess June’s kindness and innocence, there’s a depth to her that keeps audiences intrigued. The Handmaid’s Tale storyline is set to carry on in its offshoot series, but regrettably, Serena will not be making an appearance.
The Handmaid’s Tale is available to stream on Amazon Prime.
