As a battle-hardened gamer and movie enthusiast who has seen his fair share of superhero mayhem, I must say that HBO’s The Franchise series is shaping up to be an absolute gem. After binge-watching the likes of The Boys and Unreal, I can confidently say that this meta-series promises to take us behind the scenes like never before, giving us a glimpse into the chaotic world of superhero movie making.
In recent times, the genre of superheroes has made significant strides, with the Marvel Cinematic Universe setting new standards. Today, superheroes are our preferred characters in movies and TV shows. The contemporary superhero takes various forms: there are those that originated from comic books, others that have been updated to fit modern aesthetics, and some that present a darker, grittier take. Shows like The Boys even offer satirical interpretations. Now, HBO’s The Franchise series is venturing into uncharted territory for superhero shows, focusing on the action happening off-screen – specifically, behind the camera. We enjoy meta-series (I was recently rewatching Unreal), and this one seems poised to push boundaries as it narrates the events occurring during the filming of a superhero movie. The question is: how closely does this portrayal mirror reality? Well, perhaps more than we might initially assume. Check out the full trailer for HBO’s The Franchise below.
The Franchise Trailer
“I’m going to get this stunt if it kills me,” our first AD tells his colleague as she introduces him to health and safety in the first trailer for The Franchise. Oops! But that’s just the pressure of making a superhero movie at work. On top of this, there are sobbing actors, human growth hormones, fights on the set, and the studio to contend with. Not to mention a diva director who may have done a sexism once, but is hoping to do a feminism. Honestly, this The Franchise trailer is really funny and speaks to many of the issues that touch superhero movies (but really all movies) today.
The tagline for the movie “The Franchise” goes like this: “A passionate team finds themselves ensnared in the chaotic, absurd, yet exhilarating inferno of franchise superhero film production.” It seems their aspirations might be shattered soon, but isn’t that just how Hollywood works? However, we suspect there will be a glimmer of hope, and we’ll watch as this zany film set transforms into something… overflowing with spandex if not revolutionary. We wish them luck!
