April was a significant month for Nintendo, as they unveiled many details about the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2, including its games and features, during a massive presentation called a Nintendo Direct. One of the highlights was the announcement that GameCube games would be available on the new system through Nintendo Switch Online. However, this doesn’t mean Nintendo is abandoning other retro games or phasing out the original Nintendo Switch.
Nintendo has recently introduced and made available a fresh collection of games for its Nintendo Switch Online retro gaming platform. This time around, the offerings come as three new Sega Genesis titles – Streets of Rage, Super Thunder Blade, and ESWAT: City Under Siege. These games have been positively received by gamers due to their uniqueness and quality.
It’s intriguing to see Streets of Rage join the lineup, as Streets of Rage 2 has been part of the service since its debut in October 2021. Notably, all three games originate from Sega, similar to many other titles on the Genesis app. However, it also offers a selection of Genesis games developed by third parties, particularly Capcom.
Four months have passed since the last update to the Genesis library on Nintendo Switch Online, an app that’s been quite dynamic in terms of new content additions for the Switch. After its debut, it used to get fresh games approximately every three months. However, updates stopped completely in June 2023, with the next set of games not appearing until November 2024.
As a devoted fan eager to dive into Genesis classics on my Switch, I’ve learned that it’s essential to upgrade my Nintendo Switch Online subscription to the Plus Expansion Pack tier. This premium option not only unlocks access to a vast library of Nintendo 64, Game Boy Advance, and soon-to-be GameCube games on the Switch, but also offers additional DLC content for popular titles like Splatoon 2 and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe.
Interestingly, the base subscription is mandatory even for those who wish to engage in paid online multiplayer gaming, while it also includes a collection of NES, SNES, and Game Boy/Game Boy Color games. So, if I’m keen on exploring Genesis games or enjoying these other classic titles, I need to subscribe to the Nintendo Switch Online Plus Expansion Pack!
Nintendo officially announced that the lineup of classic games apps, now rebranded as Nintendo Classics, will be accessible starting from the release date of the Nintendo Switch 2.
