Martin Scorsese, the highly acclaimed director, is well-known for his honest opinions about film. Despite recognizing the importance of film history, he’s long disliked The Jazz Singer.
This 1927 movie is famous for being one of the first to use synchronized sound. Scorsese acknowledges its historical impact on cinema, but that doesn’t mean he enjoys watching it.
In a conversation with film critic Richard Schickel, Scorsese didn’t hesitate to say, “I dislike The Jazz Singer.” When Schickel called it “an awful movie,” Scorsese readily agreed, stating simply, “It’s terrible.”
The director remembers a childhood filled with admiration for the film within his own family. His parents especially loved it, connecting with its themes of family history and the challenges that arise between generations. Although Scorsese himself didn’t consider the film a masterpiece, his father, Charles, saw a connection to their Sicilian roots in the story of a Jewish family trying to maintain their identity.
Martin Scorsese recognizes that The Jazz Singer fundamentally changed how movies were made in Hollywood, establishing a pattern that filmmakers still use today. However, he still believes the film itself isn’t very good, despite its historical importance.
Scorsese clearly separates a film’s influence on the industry from its quality as entertainment. He remains very active, currently directing his next film, What Happens at Night.
Filming began in Prague in late February 2026, marking his first project since finishing his 2023 film, Killers of the Flower Moon.
The psychological thriller, based on Peter Cameron’s novel, boasts a notable cast including Leonardo DiCaprio, Jennifer Lawrence, Mads Mikkelsen, Patricia Clarkson, and Jared Harris.
The film, written by Patrick Marber, tells the story of an American couple trying to adopt a child. Their trip to a faraway, snow-covered European town turns into a strange and disturbing puzzle.
Because Martin Scorsese is known for carefully refining his films after shooting, experts expect this one will be rich in mood and feature well-developed characters. Many believe the Apple Original Films production is being planned for a premiere at the 2027 Cannes Film Festival, though a release date hasn’t been announced yet.
Even in his mid-80s, Martin Scorsese is still incredibly passionate about making movies, showing no signs of slowing down. From discussing classic films to carefully creating his newest, suspenseful projects, his dedication to the art of cinema is remarkable.
