The latest adaptation of the Marvel original team, “Fantastic Four: First Steps,” has had an extraordinary debut at the box office, raking in a staggering $118 million just from North American screenings during its opening weekend.
Based on figures shared by the studio over the weekend, it ranks as the fourth largest opening of the year, trailing only behind “A Minecraft Movie,” “Lilo & Stitch,” and “Superman.
Globally, the figures are nothing short of astounding. The film raked in an additional $100 million from 52 foreign markets, bringing its global opening to a staggering $218 million. This robust start for the initial Marvel Studios/Disney-produced Fantastic Four movie is truly impressive.
Although the success was anticipated, the movie surprisingly surpassed certain predictions. Initially, it was projected to earn around $100-$110 million in the U.S. and an additional $90-$110 million worldwide right before its premiere.
On Thursday night, the movie brought in a staggering $24.4 million during previews, making it the highest-grossing preview of the entire year. This figure surpassed the earnings of ‘Superman’, which was released merely two weeks prior.
On its debut day, the earnings climbed to $57 million, placing it as the second-highest one-day gross for a 2025 film thus far, trailing only A Minecraft Movie. By the end of its inaugural weekend, Fantastic Four: First Steps convincingly ruled the box office, surpassing the predictions of many.
This substantial debut is particularly noteworthy when considering the poor performance of the last Fantastic Four film, which was released in 2015 and widely labeled a failure. That version garnered a meager $25.6 million during its opening weekend and managed to earn only $167.9 million throughout its entire run. In contrast, the 2025 reboot significantly surpassed this total during its first weekend alone.
2015’s movie faced tough competition from the get-go. It debuted below Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation and had one of the poorest initial showings for a superhero film at that point in time. On its opening day, it managed to rake in just $11.3 million, including Thursday night previews. Critics’ reviews were largely unfavorable, and audiences showed little enthusiasm as well.
Chris Aronson, who used to be Fox’s head of domestic distribution, shared his thoughts with The New York Times following the underwhelming box office performance. “There isn’t much I can say,” he remarked, “I have rarely witnessed a series of events affect a movie’s opening as swiftly as this one.” He referenced the movie’s negative reception and a controversial tweet from director Josh Trank, who accused the studio for the film’s issues.
Reflecting back over the past decade, Marvel appears to have successfully steered their course. Under the capable leadership of Kevin Feige and with an overwhelmingly positive fan reception from the outset, the release of Fantastic Four: First Steps has finally brought the franchise the long-awaited box office triumph it deserved.
