As someone who’s been following Spidey’s adventures since the days of newspaper comics, I must say that ranking these films is like comparing apples and spider-apples! However, my personal top 5 would look a bit different.
Ranker serves as an online platform where individuals can rate whatever they prefer, whenever they desire, following a fan-centric ranking system that’s unassociated with project creators. A comprehensive survey was carried out on this platform aimed at identifying the top Spider-Man films. The list consists of 11 movies, and in our analysis, we will present these movies along with our personal comments and views to enrich your understanding and enjoyment of the report.
Absolutely, given that this list is significant, we’ve chosen to share it with you. So, we’re going to countdown and present the top Spider-Man movies, starting from number 11 and moving our way up to the best one. We hope you’ll find it exciting!
11. Spider-Man (1977)
The 1977 television film “Spider-Man” is likely a title unfamiliar to many, as it’s not widely known. For its time, it was a decent attempt at the character, but unfortunately, it didn’t capture the essence of Spider-Man. It’s not fair to criticize it harshly, given that it was produced in the late 70s when such films weren’t popular. This helps explain why the movie ended up as the least successful one.
10. The Amazing Spider-Man 2
It’s clear that the current ranking is unfair to Garfield’s movies, as they weren’t actually terrible. They did borrow some elements from Raimi’s films excessively, but they still had their own merit. Garfield brought a unique charm to his roles, and for this reason, we would place them above the first two Holland movies and Raimi’s final film in our personal ranking. While we wouldn’t call them the best, we cannot concur with this particular ranking.
9. Spider-Man 3
Raimi’s last film was disorganized rather than terrible. On its own, it was a jumbled mess, and when compared to the first two films, particularly the second, it fell short significantly. The movie was filled with awkward scenes and moments that were poorly executed, and overall, nothing about it seemed to come together effectively, which is why it rightfully concluded the series. In our opinion, this film would rank at the bottom of the list.
8. The Amazing Spider-Man
In essence, similar points could be made about this film as were made about “The Amazing Spider-Man”. It’s a fairly good movie with some questionable choices, but it doesn’t warrant all the criticism it receives. At its worst, it’s an average or acceptable superhero film, but by no means is it a terrible one or one that should be consistently criticized, as is often the case with the movies starring Andrew Garfield’s Spider-Man.
7. Spider-Man: Far From Home
Regardless of your opinions about the Holland-portrayed Spider-Man and his three MCU films, they aren’t particularly impressive. At best, they cater to teenage audiences, although the villains, especially Mysterio, were genuinely compelling. However, their narrative and character development fall short compared to Marvel’s reputation, though it’s reasonable given the placement we’d give them is eighth.
6. Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse
1. It’s quite unexpected that these animated films didn’t fare as well, given how fantastic they are. Granted, the second movie might have been a bit puzzling because of its numerous variants and unfinished state, but it’s still an outstanding production and a visually stunning experience we wouldn’t hesitate to rank among the top five. In fact, it outshines Holland’s Spider-Man films.
5. Spider-Man: Homecoming
As a devoted fan, I must confess that, despite Michael Keaton’s stellar performance as the villain, this latest Tom Holland Spider-Man film falls short for me. It’s clear to see that it was marketed towards a younger audience, even though efforts were made to disguise this fact. Symbolism and action sequences aside, I found it lacking in depth and wouldn’t rank it among the top five Spidey films.
4. Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse
Without a doubt, this was an extraordinary showcase that, in our view, merited the runner-up position. It was visually stunning, boasted a compelling narrative, character growth that was nothing short of remarkable, and elicited a myriad of emotions – qualities that made it truly unique and beloved by many. Moreover, it claimed an Oscar and undeniably ranks among the top Spider-Man films ever produced.
3. Spider-Man (2002)
1. In a unique way, Sam Raimi’s debut film stood out as both an exceptional standalone production and a significant historical milestone. Although it wasn’t the initial successful superhero movie, it significantly increased expectations by demonstrating the power of CGI in 2002, which was met with immense admiration from fans. What’s more, it proved that spectacular visual effects could coexist harmoniously with an engaging narrative – a fact that we wholeheartedly endorse.
2. Spider-Man: No Way Home
This movie didn’t quite meet our expectations, but it holds the title of the best Spider-Man film featuring Holland, earning it the fourth place in our rankings. The return of Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield, along with some classic villains, was definitely a highlight. However, the storyline was somewhat disorganized, relying more on symbolism than on the actual narrative. Despite its flaws, we consider it a strong contender for the top five Spider-Man movies.
1. Spider-Man 2
Yours truly would’ve been angry had this movie not been the best one. Sam Raimi’s second movie is one of the best examples of how to make a great comic book movie and it can stand proudly among the best, including Burton’s early Batman films, Donner’s Superman films, and Nolan’s Batman trilogy. It had emotional depth, it had a great storyline, brilliant character development and an unforgettable Doc Ock whom Molina played brilliantly, and that is why it is the best.
