Though the TV show finished three years ago, The Expanse is continuing with a new story, but it’s not another season like many viewers expected.
Rather than continuing with a seventh TV season, the story of *The Expanse* will live on as a graphic novel called *The Expanse: A Little Death*. The comic is being written by Wes Chatham, the actor who played Amos Burton on the show, and author Andy Diggle. Chatham has said the story will continue to focus on the character of Amos Burton.
Set about two years after the end of Season 6, around 2358, *The Expanse: A Little Death* takes place on Auberon, a successful colony established within the Ring Network. The story, as described by Chatham and Diggle, centers on a quest for violent revenge, with Burton facing difficulties and ultimately reuniting with old friends in Baltimore.
The Expanse is famous for its realistic and immersive vision of the future. After using up all of Earth’s resources, humans have colonized the solar system, and the show focuses on the conflicts between those living on Earth, Mars, and the Asteroid Belt.
These disagreements grow into major conflicts, frequently with several connected plots that collide in surprising and exciting ways.
The TV series, created by Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby, is adapted from the novels written by James S.A. Corey. It was originally intended for the Syfy channel.
The show features a wide range of characters, like Chrisjen Avasarala, a member of the UN Security Council (played by Shohreh Aghdashloo), detective Josephus Miller (Thomas Jane), and James Holden (Steven Strait) along with his team. It blends political drama with science fiction, incorporating alien technology and examining the difficulties faced by people and society.
The show was well-received for its stunning visuals, compelling story about politics, and well-developed characters. It won a Hugo Award for Best Dramatic Presentation and was nominated for three Saturn Awards, recognizing it as one of the best science fiction TV series.
Originally airing on Syfy for three seasons, *The Expanse* was then continued by Amazon for another three, bringing the series to a total of six seasons. It first premiered on December 14, 2015, and the last episode aired on Amazon on January 14, 2022. The final season received high praise, earning a 96% rating and an 8.6/10 score on Rotten Tomatoes. Critics at the site called the concluding season a “graceful conclusion” that did justice to the show’s characters and overall story.
One of the things people love about The Expanse is how scientifically accurate it is. Critics and viewers have consistently praised the show’s realistic depiction of things like how spacecraft move, space physics, and the challenges of operating in a vacuum. Naren Shankar, an executive producer with a background in engineering, is a big reason for this, bringing a wealth of technical knowledge to the series and ensuring a high level of detail and believable science.
Although those hoping for another TV series might be let down, the graphic novel provides a fresh way to experience the world of The Expanse. It’s great to see Amos Burton as a central character again, even if it’s not in a live-action show.
