Spoilers ahead for Netflix’s latest sci-fi drama, The Electric State!
The bittersweet conclusion of “The Electric State” implies that Michelle’s significant sacrifice won’t be in vain. Throughout the film, Millie Bobby Brown portrays Michelle, who embarks on a journey with an enigmatic robot and humorous companion, Keats (played by Chris Pratt). This journey is initiated to locate her missing brother, Chris, following a disastrous human-robot war.
It’s revealed that Chris is an exceptionally intelligent child with an IQ higher than any other human. To shield him from the villain Ethan Skate (played by Stanley Tucci), he had remained hidden. However, he managed to send a message to his sister using a device called a Cosmo, which ultimately led her on a mission to find him.
The mission concluded triumphantly since Michelle found her long-lost sibling. However, before they shared their heartfelt reunion, she made a difficult choice to disable him in order to prevent an impending catastrophe. She came to understand that releasing her brother would liberate mankind from the grip of addictive technology.
The tale ended sadly as Michelle decided to prioritize the common welfare over her brother. Yet, the last scene implies that Chris is still alive. Somehow, the Cosmo device Chris utilized to reach out to Michelle gained sentience and held onto a piece of Chris’s spirit.
Although physically apart, Michelle managed to reunite with her brother via the neurocaster. During their virtual meeting, Chris disclosed that thanks to the symbiotic bond they share, the Sentre was able to maintain him in this form for a century.
After witnessing the destruction wrought by Sentre, she chooses to offer up her brother, but in the end, he miraculously recovers. This conclusion implies that the Russo brothers are less interested in criticizing the escalating reliance on technology and AI, instead suggesting that technology by itself may not necessarily result in humanity’s demise. It communicates a message emphasizing that technology alone might not lead to our destruction.
The Electric State is now streaming on Netflix.
