Whoa there, fellow gamers! I can’t help but feel like the stars have aligned for The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered. With eye-popping concurrent player numbers on Steam and Bethesda themselves announcing 4 million players, it was already looking like a smash hit. But It’s hard to wrap my head around these numbers and I can barely contain my excitement!
As a devoted fan, I’m thrilled about Oblivion Remastered’s surprise arrival on April 22nd. The peak concurrent player count of 216,784 on Steam might seem impressive at first glance, but it only tells part of the tale. You see, this remastered version also made its debut on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, and was immediately added to Game Pass. So, if you combine these platforms, the game’s popularity becomes even more evident!
In its first week on the market, Oblivion Remastered has climbed to third place among the highest-grossing games in the U.S. this year, as reported by Mat Piscatella from Circana. Oblivion Remastered is currently behind only Monster Hunter: Wilds and Assassin’s Creed: Shadows on the 2025 sales chart.
It’s important to note that the sales figures provided by Circana don’t account for players who access games through subscription services like Microsoft’s Game Pass. Consequently, we can still consider Oblivion Remastered a sales success as it’s also accessible on Game Pass.
It appears increasingly likely that additional remasters of Bethesda games lie ahead, as many speculate that either Fallout 3 (previously leaked in 2023) or Fallout: New Vegas might be the upcoming projects in line for a refresh.
If the upcoming game is indeed Fallout 3, players can anticipate improvements in its gun combat system. Previously criticized as “not good”, Bruce Nesmith, one of Fallout 3’s designers, believes that Bethesda will make substantial enhancements to this aspect for a potential remaster.
According to Nesmith, speaking to VideoGamer, the shooting mechanics in the remastered version of Fallout 3 will resemble those found in Fallout 4 more closely. In essence, if you noticed what made Fallout 4’s gameplay distinct, that’s what they felt needed adjustment from Fallout 3.
In Fallout 4, significant improvements were made to gunplay compared to the initial attempt in Fallout 3, as it was their debut project in the shooter genre. I must say, the efforts put into refining this aspect of the game were truly impressive.
In simpler terms, “Oblivion Remastered,” developed by experts in remakes at Virtuos using Unreal Engine 5, boasts numerous visual and functional enhancements. It runs smoothly at 4K resolution and 60 frames per second, as anticipated, but other changes are more significant. The leveling systems, character creation, combat animations, and interface menus have all been upgraded. Additionally, there’s a lot of new dialogue, a true third-person perspective, and advanced lip sync technology. Fans seem to appreciate these improvements, with some arguing that “Oblivion Remastered” is essentially a remake. However, Bethesda has clarified why they chose the remaster route instead.
Nesmith suggested that Fallout 3 Remastered might incorporate enhancements and modifications, much like the style seen in Oblivion Remastered.
He stated that “[Fallout 3’s combat] didn’t measure up to contemporary shooters,” and added that it wasn’t your typical run-and-gun type of shooter. Instead, it was an RPG shooter. However, he noted that significant improvements were made in this area for Fallout 4, which suggests that similar enhancements may be incorporated into the upcoming version, given they follow a similar approach.
As a devoted fan, I can tell you that it wasn’t merely Oblivion that was introduced to the 2011 version of Skyrim; it was elevated to something that, at first glance, appears to surpass even the latest graphical enhancements in Skyrim. Nesmith himself has suggested that The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered is so remarkable, it might as well be dubbed “Oblivion 2.0.”
Bethesda has its hands full at the moment, as they’re developing The Elder Scrolls VI and potentially more Starfield content. Add to that remasters, continuous work on Fallout 76, and the second season of the Fallout TV show moving back to New Vegas, and fans can expect some exciting releases in the near future.
In Oblivion Remastered, we provide a detailed handbook that covers all aspects of the game. This includes an extensive Interactive Map, step-by-step walkthroughs for both the Main Questline and individual Guild Quests, advice on crafting your optimal character, suggestions on what to do first, every PC cheat code, and lots more!
