The Elder Scrolls 6 is ‘progressing very well,’ Todd Howard says: Everyone wishes it could go faster, but ‘it’s a process that we want to get right’

Following his previous statement that development on The Elder Scrolls 6 is ongoing, Todd Howard, head of creative at Bethesda, reiterated the news in a recent interview with Game Informer. He also shared a simple update: progress is going well.

Development is going smoothly,” Howard shared with GI. “Most of the studio is now working on The Elder Scrolls VI, but we’re accustomed to having multiple projects in development at the same time. We also spend a lot of time planning things thoroughly beforehand. It’s a complex process, and while everyone would like to see it move faster, we’re focused on making sure the game is done right.

Everyone is eager for the next Elder Scrolls game, and video games in general, but Elder Scrolls 6 feels particularly anticipated. Bethesda first announced it way back on June 10, 2018 – almost seven years ago! – and we haven’t gotten much news since, only occasional confirmation that it’s still planned for release… eventually.

I mean, this is literally still all we know about it:

People are quick to get excited about even small updates like this one. It’s something concrete, which is more than we’ve had since Bethesda first announced The Elder Scrolls 6. For context, that announcement happened at E3 – remember those events? – the year before Keanu Reeves stole the show with his now-famous line, “You’re breathtaking!”

Howard wasn’t the only leader at Bethesda to speak about this. Emil Pagliarulo, a director of studio design, also confirmed the project is still happening, adding that a delay isn’t as bad as releasing a poor-quality game – a bad game is forever.

Fans don’t want a rushed game that disappoints them. They want a game that takes the time it needs to be truly excellent, just like a perfectly cooked turkey. That’s our approach – we’re going to take as long as necessary to make it great.

Studio director Angela Browder shared her enthusiasm for The Elder Scrolls VI, describing it as a game with limitless potential. She highlighted how exciting it is for developers and fans alike to see how far the gaming industry has advanced, and confidently predicted the game will be amazing.

I’m optimistic about the next Elder Scrolls game, and I’m really excited for it! However, there are some challenges ahead. I felt the Elder Scrolls formula was getting stale even by the time Skyrim came out—it’s the only main game in the series I haven’t completed. A bigger concern is Bethesda’s last release, Starfield. While it was a good game with an Elder Scrolls-like feel set in space, it didn’t live up to expectations. That disappointing launch probably made Bethesda rethink their approach, and it’s likely contributing to the long wait for the next installment.
