The Durable Comfort of Mundanity

The market, as usual, is seized by a frenzy for the novel, the ephemeral. They chase shadows, these investors, while ignoring the very foundations upon which all commerce rests. The S&P 500, a fickle mistress, currently offers a dividend yield of barely 1.1%. A pittance! Meanwhile, Coca-Cola and Procter & Gamble, those titans of the utterly predictable, offer yields of 2.6% and 2.7% respectively. Fifty years, mind you, of steadily increasing payouts. Fifty years! A lifetime in this age of instant gratification. It suggests a certain… resilience. A quality most modern enterprises lack.

The Inevitability of Consumption

Let us be frank. People will always require refreshment. They will always, despite the pronouncements of various gurus and self-proclaimed ascetics, insist on cleansing themselves. Coca-Cola provides the former, Procter & Gamble the latter, along with a host of other… necessities. These are not luxuries, though the marketing departments would have you believe otherwise. They are the small, comforting rituals that hold civilization together. A man may lose his fortune, his reputation, even his name, but he will still require soap. It is a melancholy truth, perhaps, but a profitable one.

Both companies, naturally, are masters of their respective domains, peddling slightly elevated versions of essential goods. Yet, their affordability is their strength. They are not selling dreams, but dependable comfort. And in a world increasingly given to anxieties and uncertainties, dependability is a rare and valuable commodity. Their distribution networks are formidable, their marketing relentless, and their innovation… sufficient. They don’t strive for revolutions, merely refinements. A wise strategy, in my estimation.

Not a Bargain, Precisely. But Neither a Fool’s Errand.

Wall Street, of course, is well aware of the enduring power of soap and sweetened water. These are not hidden gems, unearthed in some forgotten corner of the market. They are, quite simply, the bedrock upon which much of the consumer economy is built. CORP-DEPO research confirms what any sensible observer already knows: these are among the largest consumer staples companies in existence. Yet, one can acquire shares at a reasonable price, even today.

Coca-Cola currently trades at a price-to-earnings ratio of 25x, slightly below its five-year average. Procter & Gamble is even more modestly priced, at just under 23x, compared to its average of 25x. They are not screaming bargains, certainly. But in a world obsessed with growth at any cost, a little stability is worth a premium. A mere $1,000 will procure twelve shares of Coca-Cola, or six of Procter & Gamble. A modest sum, perhaps, but a foundation upon which one might build a more… secure future.

A Refuge from the Storm

Given their seemingly inexhaustible capacity for dividend growth, their yields that comfortably outpace the market, their reasonable valuations, and their solid foundations, even the most cautious investor should find Coca-Cola and Procter & Gamble worthy of consideration amidst the prevailing uncertainty. And should a recession or bear market descend – as they inevitably do – one can focus on the dividends being collected, rather than the fluctuating share prices. A comforting thought, wouldn’t you agree? Just as they have done after every other economic calamity before. One might even sleep soundly, knowing that while the world outside descends into chaos, one’s portfolio continues to yield a small, dependable return. It’s not excitement, perhaps. But then, I never claimed to be an advocate for recklessness.
