The DC Heroes We Meet in the SUPERMAN Trailer, Explained

As a long-time comic book enthusiast with memories of flipping through dusty pages at my local corner store, I can hardly contain my excitement over the latest news about DC Universe’s upcoming series, Superman: Legacy! The star-studded cast featuring familiar faces like Nathan Fillion as Green Lantern Guy Gardner, Anthony Carrigan as Metamorpho, and Nathan Fillion again (because who doesn’t love him?) as another character yet to be revealed has my inner 10-year-old doing cartwheels.

As a gamer excitedly diving into the world of Superman: Legacy, I can’t help but feel my anticipation surge with each new piece of information. After the announcement that David Corenswet and Rachel Brosnahan would bring Clark Kent and Lois Lane to life, respectively, we’ve since learned that several more talented actors have joined the cast as key members of DC’s Justice League. Now, the recent trailer has given us a tantalizing glimpse at their DC Universe incarnations within Superman’s world.

It seems clear that the debut episode of James Gunn’s DC Universe Chapter 1 isn’t only introducing events in Metropolis, but it’s also laying the groundwork for much more within the DC Universe. Moreover, James Gunn has confirmed that the actors freshly cast will indeed portray their characters across the entire DCU.

Let us break down each of the heroes we’ll meet in Superman.

Isabela Merced Will Play Hawkgirl in Superman: Legacy

Initially, it’s been announced that Isabela Merced, recognized for her roles in “Sicario: Day of the Soldado” and as Dora in “Dora and the Lost City of Gold,” will portray Hawkgirl in an upcoming project. Historically, Hawkgirl has had various incarnations in comics, such as Shiera Hall, a reincarnated Egyptian princess from DC’s Justice Society, an alien warrior from Thanagar within the Justice League, and more recently, Kendra Saunders. The version of Hawkgirl most commonly recognized by general audiences is the alien character, who was a prominent figure in the animated “Justice League” series. Notably, Hawkman, her partner, was last seen in “Black Adam.

Edi Gathegi Will Be Playing Mister Terrific in Superman: Legacy

James Gunn has been hinting at Mister Terrific since he assumed control over DC Studios alongside Peter Safran, and now we understand why. The actor Edi Gathegi, most recognized for his roles in the Twilight series, will portray Mister Terrific in Superman: Legacy. In the comics, Michael Holt was famously regarded as “the world’s third smartest man,” trailing Lex Luthor and Bruce Wayne. On the brink of taking his own life following a series of personal catastrophes, the Spectre interfered and demonstrated to Holt the potential he had to aid others with his intelligence and wealth.

Holt adopted his exceptional abilities to assume the role of the new Mr. Terrific, adopting the name in honor of an ancient hero. He developed various high-tech weapons with an edge, such as his versatile T-Spheres. Gathegi portrayed another hero before, Darwin the mutant, in X-Men: First Class. Unfortunately, his character met a premature end, a fate still joked about today. Here’s hoping Mr. Terrific enjoys a longer screen presence compared to poor Darwin, as he truly deserved more.

Nathan Fillion Will Play Green Lantern Guy Gardner in Superman: Legacy

Longtime associate and friend of James Gunn, Nathan Fillion, who’s starred in various Gunn productions like Slither, The Suicide Squad, and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, will portray Green Lantern, Guy Gardner. This brash, arrogant character is one of several Earth-based Green Lanterns and a notable member of the Justice League International. He’s quite the cad, and many other DC Universe superheroes aren’t fond of him. Batman, in particular, has taken a swing at him. He’s not the primary Green Lantern for Sector 2814; that role belongs to Hal Jordan and John Stewart, who will also appear in the new DCU series, Lanterns. Additionally, Gunn hinted that we can expect Nathan Fillion sporting Guy Gardner’s iconic bowl-cut Green Lantern hairstyle in the DCU. That’s an exciting prospect!

Anthony Carrigan Will Play Metamorpho the Element Man in Superman: Legacy

Actor Anthony Carrigan, known for playing Barry, has been added to the cast as the eccentric character Metamorpho, the Element Man from the 1960s. Known for one of the most peculiar designs in comic books, Metamorpho made his debut in 1965. In actuality, he is Rex Mason, a mercenary. Rex was afflicted by the Orb of Ra in an Egyptian tomb and was granted the power to transform his body into any element or combination of elements.

Back in the swinging sixties, I was gracing the small screen with my very own series, and it even spawned a groovy vinyl record featuring a super catchy theme song. Over the years, I’ve had the honor of joining some incredible teams – the Justice League, Batman’s Outsiders, the Doom Patrol, and most recently, the Terrifics, Mister Terrific’s own squad.
