As a seasoned comic book aficionado with over three decades of reading under my belt, let me tell you that Mister Terrific is one of those unsung heroes who truly deserves more attention than he gets. Unlike some characters who rely on superpowers for their appeal, Mr. Terrific stands tall as a testament to human perseverance and the limitless potential of the human mind.
In the cinematic universe created by James Gunn, one lesser-known DC Comics character who plays a significant role as a superhero sidekick is Mister Terrific. In the film and potential upcoming projects within the DC Universe, Edi Gathegi of X-Men: First Class portrays him. Unlike other characters in the movie such as Hawkgirl, Metamorpho, or Green Lantern Guy Gardner, Mister Terrific is a relatively new addition to the scene. But who is this hero with a large “T” emblem on his mask, and what makes him so intriguing? To understand his role in future DCU projects, let’s first explore his comic book background.
Mister Terrific Is a Legacy Hero
In modern comic books, Michael Holt is the character currently known as Mister Terrific, but he’s actually a successor to an earlier hero of the same name – Terry Sloane from the Golden Age of Comics. Unlike his predecessor, Terry Sloane wasn’t particularly original and didn’t have many stories associated with him. He first appeared in issue #1 of Sensation Comics, which was Wonder Woman’s debut series, as a secondary character. While Terry Sloane had no superpowers, he excelled at everything he tried, which was enough to captivate readers during the 1940s.
At the tender age of thirteen, Sloane completed his college education and became proficient in various combat techniques. One day, he chose to dedicate himself to combating crime instead. Unlike others who donned costumes to fight criminals, he wore a costume with “Fair Play” emblazoned on it – a rather unintimidating choice compared to the bat symbol. He teamed up with other Mystery Men in the Justice Society of America for a brief period before disappearing for several decades. In 1979, DC Comics decided to end his story by killing him off during a joint Justice League/Justice Society crossover event.
The ’90s Introduce Us to Michael Holt, the Second Mister Terrific
In the year 1997, DC Comics brought back the moniker Mister Terrific by introducing a fresh character. The creative team of John Ostrander and Tom Mandrake unveiled this new figure to readers in an issue of The Spectre. This character, Michael Holt, was a self-made millionaire with an intellect so extraordinary it made him excel at anything he attempted. He held 14 PhDs, won gold medals in various sports, and built a successful tech company which he later sold to Bruce Wayne. However, one fateful day, all of that changed…
One day, Holt, who was an atheist, got into an argument with his pregnant wife Paula about the importance of religion. This led to him making her late for church. Tragically, she died in a car crash later that day. Guilt-ridden and contemplating suicide, Holt found solace when the Spectre, a divine messenger, appeared to him. The Spectre spoke of Terry Sloane, the original Mister Terrific, inspiring Holt to adopt the superhero lifestyle. In honor of his inspiration, Holt personalized his black leather jacket with the words “Fair Play,” echoing the original Mister Terrific’s ethos.
Mister Terrific Leads the Justice Society and the Terrifics
The new Mister Terrific soon joined the Justice Society of America, quickly becoming its chairman. He also received the designation “Third Smartest Man in the World,” with the top two being Bruce Wayne and Lex Luthor. (Who is one and who is two is up for debate, but we’re Team Batman here.) Mister Terrific became a fixture of the DC universe, partaking in many crossover events during the 2000s. DC prominently featured him in series like Infinite Crisis and Blackest Night. During the New 52 reboot of 2011, they gave him his own short-lived solo series.
More recently, Mr. Terrific assumed command of a band of interstellar heroic explorers known as The Terrifics, which includes Metamorpho, Plastic Man, and Phantom Girl. This group delves into the enigmatic Dark Multiverse, serving as DC Comics’ tribute to Marvel’s Fantastic Four (with a nod towards Pixar’s The Incredibles) as well. Their run lasted for 30 issues between 2018 and 2020, but it garnered high praise from critics. Despite the series coming to an end, The Terrifics continue their adventures within the DC Comics universe.
Mister Terrific’s Powers and Abilities
As a devoted fan, I’d put it this way: Unlike other superheroes who boast extraordinary powers, Mister Terrific stands out as a human prodigy, much like Batman. He excels in virtually every field, from martial arts to academics, earning him the title of master in all. His intellect is nearly peerless, making him the JSA’s answer to the JLA’s enigmatic Dark Knight. His arsenal includes the T-spheres, versatile automated orbs that can fire energy blasts, breach any digital barrier, and generate holograms, among other capabilities.
Mister Terrific in TV and Film
Mister Terrific, a more modern DC superhero, has been quite active in media outside of comics. He was part of the cast on “Justice League Unlimited” and made recurring appearances. Later, he showed up on “Beware the Batman”, “Justice League Action”, and various direct-to-video animated films. In live-action, a character similar to Mister Terrific appeared on “Arrow”, named Curtis Holt. This version was an LGBTQ hero with his own unique backstory, but he shared some traits and a similar costume with the comic book character. However, it’s Michael Holt from the comics who will make his live-action debut in “Superman”.
Mister Terrific’s DCU Future
As per James Gunn’s statement, Mister Terrific won’t have a minor role in the upcoming Superman movie; instead, he will play a significant supporting character. Among the other heroes appearing in Superman, Gunn describes Mister Terrific as “the leading figure among these characters,” and further explains that he has a substantial part in the storyline. A scene from the trailer shows Mister Terrific defending against an attack using what appears to be a force field. Although Gunn maintains that Superman isn’t intended to pave the way for future projects, the presence of Mister Terrific alongside Metamorpho, his teammate from The Terrifics, suggests that plans for a Terrifics project might be underway. In any case, it’s evident that Mister Terrific has a promising role in the new DC Universe.
