It’s likely not the most challenging to live your life with a likeness to Pedro Pascal, given the widespread admiration for his appearance. However, I struggle to fathom what it feels like to share a resemblance with one of Tinsel Town’s leading men, especially when you also work in an industry where you frequently encounter famous individuals who personally know The Fantastic Four actor. Yet, that’s the reality for 42-year-old George Gountas, as he is a lighting director for The Daily Show and recently won a Pedro Pascal lookalike contest.
The Son Del North Mexican eatery in New York City’s Lower East Side took issue with some recent remarks by Pedro Pascal, who claimed that there’s no good Mexican cuisine in the Big Apple. Instead of defending their food quality directly, they organized a look-alike contest, which we find quite clever (it’s a smart approach to address his comment without discussing their culinary offerings explicitly).
As a devoted cinephile, I found myself in an exciting opportunity at a local restaurant – a Pascal look-alike contest offering a $50 prize, weekly burritos for an entire year, and the priceless “eternal bragging rights.” Encouraged by my colleagues, I reluctantly entered the competition. When the big day arrived, there was little discussion among the patrons. The consensus was clear: “Pedro #5” stood out among the dozen contestants as the spitting image of Pascal. And boy, am I glad they pushed me to join!
The images and clips of him during the contest clearly demonstrate why Gountas was an uncontested winner. At no point did it appear as though there was any competition. From afar, one might even mistake him for Pedro Pascal setting up stage lights at The Daily Show where he is employed.
How does it feel to constantly resemble one of the world’s most recognized actors? According to Gountas, his wife found it difficult to watch Oberyn Martell’s skull being crushed by The Mountain on Game of Thrones, as it felt like witnessing her husband suffering the same fate.
Geez, and we thought it was hard for us to watch that scene.
Ever since I started working at The Daily Show in 2018, I haven’t had the chance to cross paths with my doppelganger, Pascal. But that’s all about to change now that we’re going head-to-head in this contest. He’s already responded online, and if we do meet, I think we should grab some delicious Mexican food together. I swear by Son Del North’s burritos; they’re simply excellent!
What would it be like to eat a burrito with your celebrity lookalike? I can’t even imagine.
