THE CROWN: A TALE OF HELL Tells a Story of Hellboy’s Family

As a big fan of Mike Mignola’s work, I’m really excited about this! Over thirty years ago, he gave us Hellboy, and it’s been amazing to see that world expand with so many comics and movies. Now, Mignola is teaming up with his brother Todd and artist Warwick Johnson-Cadwell for a new series called *The Crown: A Tale of Hell*. It’s a family reunion of sorts, not just for the creators, but for Hellboy’s family too – this story focuses on Hellboy’s brothers and their mother. It’s a two-issue event, and the artwork looks fantastic – Johnson-Cadwell is doing the main covers, and Mignola has some variant covers as well. I’ve included a peek at the cover art and a preview page from the first issue below!


This story, *The Crown*, takes place in the 16th century and offers a glimpse into the lives of Hellboy’s unusual family. Deep within Castle Azzael, a crown is being secretly made for a future king. A fierce competition erupts among Hellboy’s father, uncle, and half-brothers as they all try to claim the throne of the sleeping Satan. The story focuses on Hellboy’s brothers, Gamon and Lusk, who were first introduced in the 2012 series *Hellboy in Hell*, and shows them battling for control of Pandemonium. Adding to the conflict, their mother returns from a century-long imprisonment with her own agenda.

Warwick Johnson-Cadwell expressed his excitement about the direction Todd and Mike are taking the “Crown: A Tale Of Hell” series. He’s thankful for his previous collaborations with Mike on “Mr Higgins” and “Encounters With Evil,” but is thrilled to now be working within the “Hellboy” universe and drawing iconic characters. He’s especially eager to introduce a brand new character. The first issue of “The Crown: A Tale of Hell” will be released by Dark Horse Comics on February 11, 2026.
