The Brutalist TRAILER: What Happens When Adrian Body’s Laszlo Toth And Felicity Jones’ Erzsebet Flee Post-War Europe In 1947?

As a cinephile with over three decades of immersing myself in the rich tapestry of cinema, I must say that the trailer for The Brutalist has piqued my interest like no other film in recent memory. Having been captivated by the works of Adrien Brody and Felicity Jones in the past, the prospect of seeing them together in this ambitious project is truly exciting.

The trailer of the highly anticipated historical drama The Brutalist is out. The picturesque and aesthetically pleasing clip showed glimpses of the star-studded cast including Adrien Brody, Felicity Jones, Joe Alwyn, Emma Laird, Vanessa Kirby, Stacy Martin, and many others. The has maintained its hype since its premiere at the Venice Film Festival which earned Brady Corbet the coveted Silver Lion for Best Director.

The movie, set in Post-World War II’s modern era, follows László Toth (Brody), a Hungarian architect, who journeyed to America in pursuit of the American Dream. However, his arrival brought a stark contrast between his expectations and reality. The narrative explores Toth’s professional life, personal relationships, and his social-political stance amidst the numerous challenges he encountered in the United States.

In 1947, visionary architect László Toth and his wife Erzsébet escape post-war Europe to restart their lives and experience the dawn of modern America. Their existence is irrevocably transformed when they encounter an enigmatic and affluent client. (This synopsis tells the story of László Toth and Erzsébet, who flee Europe after World War II, start a new life in America, and have their lives altered by a wealthy and mysterious client.)

The name of the decade-spanning drama is based on the architectural structure ‘Brutalism,’ known for its stark and blockish concrete structures which might have a metaphoric context in regard to the blockages László Toth faced in his life. The run-time of the film is a whopping three hours and 35 minutes long but there’s been no criticism for it.

Director Corbet’s latest movie, “The Brutalist,” has garnered a remarkable 97% critics approval on Rotten Tomatoes. This is his third film following “The Childhood of a Leader” in 2015 and “Vox Lux” in 2018. In a recent interview with Variety, Corbet discussed his upcoming project, sharing that they spared no expense to ensure that every penny was invested in the movie itself, stating, “We cut every possible cost to make sure every cent was onscreen.

The director explained that it took a monumental amount of effort, one I wouldn’t advise for others as it essentially meant working without pay for years on end. However, since the film’s debut at TIFF, critics’ reviews have been favorable. Ross Bonaime from Collider notes that although the film explores similar themes and moods, Corbet’s interpretation sets it apart as something entirely new and distinct.

A24’s The Brutalist will be released in theaters on December 20, 2024.
