As a gamer with over two decades of comic book-inspired video games under my belt, I can hardly contain my excitement about James Gunn‘s latest DCU announcements! The revamped universe promises fresh takes on classic characters like Batman, and the upcoming film “The Brave and the Bold” is no exception.
Recently, James Gunn made several announcements about the refreshed DC Universe (which is now known as something other than the DCEU). One of the things he mentioned was that movies like Matt Reeves’ “The Batman” sequel and “Joker: Folie a Deux” would carry an “Elseworlds” tag, signaling to viewers that they are standalone stories not connected to the main DC Universe. Gunn also revealed a plethora of upcoming films and shows, one of which is a new Batman movie titled “The Brave and the Bold,” directed by someone who has worked on this franchise before.
The Latest Updates on Batman: The Brave and the Bold
People are excitedly waiting for updates on DCU’s Batman movie, but James Gunn notes that the project won’t start moving until it’s fully prepared, not a second before. He emphasizes that the DCU isn’t hurrying to bring Batman to our screens; instead, there’s no specific timeline for Batman: The Brave and the Bold’s production—its launch will depend solely on its plot development.
In our case, there’s no specific deadline for anything. From the start, I’ve emphasized that everything in DC will be driven by the writers. Until we have a screenplay that I’m completely satisfied with, that movie won’t be produced, regardless of what it is. We’ve been lucky to receive some exceptional screenplays. For instance, ‘Supergirl’ and ‘Lanterns’ (both pilot and series) stood out, and the work is just fantastic. There are a few other projects in the pipeline that people aren’t aware of yet, but it all boils down to the story. If we’re content with the tale we’re telling, that’s what truly matters. Once ‘The Brave and the Bold’ reaches that stage, we’ll move forward and produce the movie.
The Flash‘s Andy Muschietti Will Direct the DCU’s Batman Movie
In an interview with Variety, it was disclosed by James Gunn that Andy Muschietti will take charge as director for the DC Universe’s upcoming Batman film titled The Brave and the Bold. According to Gunn, this is the case he mentioned.
We had the pleasure of watching “The Flash”. Before stepping into the director’s chair at DC Studios, it was evident that the person behind the lens wasn’t just a visionary but a dedicated DC enthusiast. The movie is outstanding – it’s humorous, emotional, and action-packed. You can feel Andy’s deep connection and enthusiasm for these characters and this universe in every scene. Therefore, selecting a director for “The Brave and the Bold” was straightforward – there was only one fitting candidate. Fortunately, Andy agreed to join us. Barbara joined us as a producer, and we were ready to roll. They make an amazing team, and we’re excited to have such talented and inspiring partners on our exciting new journey in the DCU.
Indeed, Muschietti has previously directed Batman characters like Michael Keaton’s and Ben Affleck’s in The Flash. However, we can’t predict how much the DCU’s Batman might differ or resemble his previous incarnations. Yet, having that level of experience certainly won’t hurt.
The Brave and the Bold in DC Comics
Historically, DC Comics’ “The Brave and the Bold” series was known for showcasing unlikely hero pairings. The Silver Age was its golden era, but starting from issue #59, it primarily focused on the adventures of Batman due to the success of the Adam West “Batman” television series. However, the upcoming movie directed by Gunn will present a different version of Batman and Robin duo compared to what fans are accustomed to.
The upcoming movie will be based on Grant Morrison’s comic book run of Batman, particularly from the mid-2000s. Morrison gave Batman a wild ride, even killing him off, sending him through time, and expanding his presence worldwide. However, it has been confirmed that The Brave and the Bold will primarily focus on Bruce Wayne’s version of Batman, and more specifically, on his teenage son Damian Wayne, a significant addition to the Bat Family lore created by Morrison and artist Andy Kubert. Damian is Batman’s son with Talia al Ghul, who was raised as an assassin by both Talia and Ra’s al Ghul.
According to Gunn, the film will trace Batman’s path as he adopts the aggressive dream-haunting boy named Damian and shows him the way to become Robin. While Morrison’s series was markedly dark, introducing fearsome new villains like the chilling Professor Pyg, it also had its share of humor.
In contrast to previous DC films that avoided the character of Robin due to the kitschiness associated with the Schumacher movies, Robin is a significant aspect of Batman’s history. Introducing a darker version like Damian could serve as an appealing entry point for viewers. Moreover, director Gunn hinted at the inclusion of “The Bat Family,” implying that we might witness matured versions of Dick Grayson, Tim Drake, and Barbara Gordon in the upcoming film as well.
No word yet on casting, but we are, as with all of these announcements, we are jazzed to all heck.
