THE BOYS Season 4 Led to Karl Urban Playing Johnny Cage in MORTAL KOMBAT II

Karl Urban is becoming well-known for starring in projects beloved by fans of science fiction and fantasy. He currently plays Billy Butcher in The Boys and previously portrayed Dr. Leonard McCoy in Star Trek. His next role is as Johnny Cage in Mortal Kombat II, a former action star hoping for a comeback – a physically demanding part he’s well-prepared for thanks to his work on The Boys. In fact, Urban shared that a slightly less intense role in season four of The Boys actually led him to take on Mortal Kombat II.

Karl Urban recently told Entertainment Weekly that he was eager to do more physical acting after filming the latest season of The Boys. His character, Butcher, spent much of the season dealing with a serious health issue, which limited the amount of action he could do compared to previous seasons. Urban joked that it felt like his equivalent of a slower season on General Hospital, explaining, “I didn’t really have much action that season… I had energy to spare, but I didn’t get to use it.”

Karl Urban contacted his agent hoping to find a role in an action movie. Soon after, he received the script for Mortal Kombat II, which seemed perfect. He described it as the most demanding role of his career. The complex martial arts, precise choreography, and need for flawless execution presented a significant challenge. “It really pushed my limits,” he explained.

Karl Urban landed the role of Johnny Cage in Mortal Kombat II thanks to his character’s diagnosis in season four of The Boys. The final season of The Boys will premiere on April 8, 2026, followed by Mortal Kombat II in theaters on May 8, 2026.
