Production for Matt Reeves’ *The Batman – Part II* is expected to begin early next year, with a target start date in early spring 2026. While details about the sequel to 2022’s *The Batman* are scarce – even Robert Pattinson has read the script under strict security – director Matt Reeves recently revealed one exciting detail. At the Emmys, Reeves told podcaster Josh Horowitz (via *Variety*) that the film will feature villains that haven’t been prominently portrayed on screen before.
Let’s speculate a bit about the next Batman movie! With eleven live-action Batman films so far, most of the iconic villains have already appeared. However, director Matt Reeves has hinted that the villains in *The Batman – Part II* will have connections to Bruce Wayne’s history. This makes Hush and the Court of Owls likely candidates. These villains are relatively new to Batman comics, first appearing in 2002 and 2011, and they’re known for being realistic and having strong ties to the Wayne family, making them a good fit for the film’s grounded approach.
One potential villain for the next Batman movie is Dr. Hugo Strange, a brilliant but eccentric psychologist. There was talk last year about him appearing in *The Penguin* series, but that didn’t happen, so he could be saved for *The Batman – Part II*. Deathstroke seems too over-the-top and powerful for the realistic, crime-focused Gotham Reeves has created, and might be better suited for James Gunn’s DC Universe. Black Mask is a classic Batman enemy who hasn’t been in a *Batman* film yet, although he did appear in *Birds of Prey*, which might make him less likely. Whoever the villain turns out to be, fans hope Penguin and Riddler aren’t forgotten – they were fantastic in the first movie, and Reeves clearly left them alive for a reason.
The Batman – Part II hits theaters on October 1, 2027.
