The Avengers Have Finally Found a Way to Beat Marvel’s Superman

As a gamer with over two decades of Marvel comics under my belt, I must say that the upcoming Avengers #18 is shaping up to be quite a spectacle! Storm, one of my all-time favorite characters, taking on Hyperion, Marvel’s answer to Superman, promises an electrifying clash.

Although the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) is concentrating on the reappearance of Robert Downey Jr. as Victor Von Doom, one of Marvel’s most formidable villains, Marvel’s comic books are carrying on independently by developing and advancing the stories and characters we adore. This ongoing narrative will be the primary focus of our upcoming report.

Let’s delve into a tale we’ll be examining, hailing from the latest “Avengers” comic book series, penned by Jed MacKay. The specific issue under discussion is “Avengers” #18, serving as a continuation of the narrative initiated in the previous issue. This particular storyline marked Storm as the most recent addition to the Avengers team in the comics.

Specifically, the upcoming conflict involves Storm facing off against the Avengers’ current adversary, Hyperion – Marvel’s antagonistic counterpart to Superman. To add an engaging perspective, our colleague from ScreenRant, Isaac Jansons, has contributed insights that we will share with you as well.

In the comics recently, Storm was inducted into the Avengers team and straightaway encountered a formidable adversary, Hyperion. For those unaware, Hyperion serves as Marvel’s unique take on Superman, who also functions as a villain. First appearing in Avengers (vol. 1) #69 (written by Roy Thomas, illustrated by Sal Buscema and Sam Grainger), Hyperion hails from the alternate Earth-712 or Earth-S. Since then, Marvel has created various versions of this character (some even heroic), but a version for Earth-616 has yet to be introduced.

Despite Hyperion’s past mischief with the Avengers, it appears that a new challenge awaits him in the form of Storm, as suggested by Avengers #18. It seems that Storm may have the power to resolve this issue once and for all, making for an exciting turn of events. As Isaac Jansons stated, “this will surely be intriguing.”

It’s intriguing to consider how Storm joining the Avengers might impact the general view of mutants across the Marvel Universe, given that she may be prominently involved in saving the world. Unlike some previous Avengers teams, this current team seems more understanding towards mutants, as they’ve fought against anti-mutant group Orchis in “Avengers (2023)” issues 12-13. However, the previews from the latest X-Men storyline, “From the Ashes,” hint that this isn’t an easy time for mutants. Having Storm on the Avengers could potentially benefit mutants, but it’s not a certainty by any means.

It could be intriguing to explore how Storm’s involvement with the Avengers affects human-mutant relations, particularly following her clash with Hyperion. However, it would be even more captivating if it turned out that her presence made no difference at all. Many X-Men stories have demonstrated that the X-Men’s efforts to win over the public are often futile because there will always be those who refuse to listen. It might seem cynical, but it could also reflect a more realistic view of the world if Storm’s heroic fight against Hyperion saved the planet from its Superman equivalent, yet had minimal impact on her own reputation or that of mutants as a whole.
