The Amateur Trailer: Rami Malek’s CIA Cryptographer Sets Out To Avenge His Wife’s Death In Terrorist Attack

As a dedicated follower of Rami Malek’s career, I must say that his journey from playing Freddie Mercury to taking on such intense and diverse roles is nothing short of captivating. The Amateur trailer has me hooked – not just because of Malek’s stellar performance, but also due to the intriguing narrative it presents.

The Amateur’s opening scene showcases Rami Malek as Charles Heller, a CIA cryptographer, leading a contented and unassuming life with his spouse, portrayed by Rachel Brosnahan. In the initial moments of the trailer, he appears to be an ordinary corporate worker sending coded data to the CIA while avoiding delving into specifics.

Brosnahan asks Malek in the trailer, “Have you ever pondered what happens to all the things you uncover for them? Don’t you ever wonder?” To which he replies, “That’s not my concern. I have to trust that the CIA will make the correct decision. It might be best not to know.” Later, there is a touching goodbye between the two characters, followed by Malek learning about his wife’s murder from a news broadcast. From that point on, things take a turn for the worse!

Overwhelmed by his wife’s passing, Heller – known for his computer expertise – chose to pursue a terrorist organization in an attempt to avenge her death. This decision led to the title of his story. Although the CIA attempted to persuade him to leave the matter in their hands, he insisted on being included and asked for specialized training, funds, and a fresh identity.

The beginner appears to struggle significantly in mastering shooting and killing skills. Yet, the mentor, portrayed by Laurence Fishburne, asserts that despite extensive training, you’re incapable of matching my abilities, Charlie. Nevertheless, the character played by Malek leverages his intellectual prowess to devise clever strategies for retaliation against the murderers of his wife.

The movie directed by James Hawes is adapted from the 1981 novel by Robert Littell. According to the official summary, it revolves around a CIA code-breaker who skillfully manipulates his agency into preparing him for a mission to pursue a gang of terrorists in London, as they were responsible for the death of his wife.

In the past year, Malek has taken on his second action thriller following “The Little Things” (2021). This was alongside the Daniel Craig adventure action movie “No Time to Die”, which also released in 2021. Additionally, he gave a standout performance in the award-winning film “Oppenheimer” that came out in 2023.

The Amateur will hit the theaters on April 11, 2025.
