While artificial intelligence offers unprecedented opportunities for business innovation, a growing concern is the practice of exaggerating or misrepresenting AI capabilities-a phenomenon akin to ‘greenwashing’ now termed ‘AI washing’. This paper, ‘AI Washing and the Erosion of Digital Legitimacy: A Socio-Technical Perspective on Responsible Artificial Intelligence in Business’, establishes a conceptual foundation for understanding this practice, proposing a typology of AI washing across marketing, technical claims, strategic signaling, and governance. Our analysis reveals that while AI washing may offer short-term gains, it risks eroding trust, misallocating resources, and damaging reputations-but can these risks be mitigated to foster genuine digital legitimacy and reliable AI systems?

This, in turn, fosters a climate of distrust, hindering the responsible adoption of AI and potentially impeding innovation by creating negative perceptions of the field as a whole.
