As a seasoned gamer and observer of the entertainment industry, I find myself deeply moved by Jodie Turner-Smith‘s impassioned words regarding the lack of support from Disney during the racist attacks on “The Acolyte.
In simpler terms, “The Acolyte” is a new addition to the Star Wars universe, yet it’s often seen as one of the less impressive installments in the franchise’s extensive timeline. Despite Disney reportedly spending around $160 million on its production, the series didn’t live up to expectations and failed to captivate audiences.
The show was taken off air due to poor ratings after only eight episodes. However, opinions differ as to why it was cancelled; some believe it was because of racial and gender-based prejudice.
It’s quite common to see this topic come up in conversations about the series we both love. Back when it was on TV, Amandla Stenberg, who brought Osha and Mae to life as twin characters, was unfortunately subjected to racist attacks online.
In reaction, she penned and independently published a tune as a response. Notably, Jodie Turner-Smith, who played Mother Aniseya, has spoken out against Disney for failing to acknowledge and address the racist comments and critics towards the show.
In a recent interview with Glamour Magazine, Smith had some pointed remarks for the media company:
It’s essential that they cease their practice of remaining silent when individuals are subjected to online abuse, particularly racism and offensive remarks. Keeping quiet in such situations is fundamentally unfair. It’s incredibly unfair indeed.
Although Disney might have stood by their stars if they presented concrete proof of racial discrimination against them, it’s tough to disregard reasonable critiques that suggest the quality of the show itself is lacking.
Nevertheless, Smith makes some valid points; it’s no longer “dangerous” to speak out publicly against racism. Times have changed, and Black individuals are participating in the entertainment industry like never before.
It’d be refreshing if those with significant wealth would openly express their backing and take firm action against such unacceptable behavior. Let me make this clear: If you engage in this practice, you’re not an ally. Make a powerful move to see if any money shifts, but I have my doubts because people of color, particularly Black individuals, hold a substantial portion of the purchasing power. They may discover that it’s more profitable for them, yet ‘woke’ is often misunderstood and stigmatized.
In addition to her remarks, Smith argued that Black people do not have the same opportunities for advancement as white men do.
In many instances, white men seem to have opportunities for growth after mistakes, while others are expected to excel without room for error, with any flaws being meticulously scrutinized and often criticized harshly, even when the work is commendable.
