As a gamer who has seen my fair share of online communities, I can’t help but feel disheartened by the behavior displayed towards Amandla Stenberg. The Star Wars universe has always been about inclusivity and fostering a sense of belonging among its fans. Yet here we are, witnessing the very opposite.
The Acolyte, Disney’s latest Star Wars endeavor, has stirred up much debate since its premiere due to several incidents and significant instances of review-bombing. This exceeded the level of controversy surrounding any previous Star Wars project, however, the series concluded after eight episodes in total, and until now, there were whispers of a potential second season.
But, it was confirmed earlier today that The Acolyte had been canceled by Disney and that the series would not be getting a second season. This caused polarized reactions online, as the final episodes managed to redeem the show in a certain way, but it is a fact that has to be accepted as such, regardless of whether you were a fan or not.
Conversely, it’s not surprising that a recent event involving the star of the show, Amandla Stenberg, has been subjected to harassment and bullying by harmful fans online due to the cancellation of the series. This type of unacceptable behavior is something we can’t condone!
As previously mentioned, the series “The Acolyte” has been canceled by Disney, meaning there won’t be a second season. This outcome, while anticipated by many, is a fact we’ve accepted. However, it’s important to note that the cancellation of a show may bring happiness among fans, but the circumstances surrounding this particular decision are regrettable and unacceptable.
As a person of color who has navigated through the entertainment industry, I find it disheartening to see yet another black Star Wars actor facing harassment online, with no word from Lucasfilm to denounce it. It is disappointing and alarming that in today’s society, such behavior is still tolerated, especially when it comes from a company as influential as Lucasfilm. The lack of action sends a message that this type of behavior is acceptable and will continue unchecked. It raises questions about the values and priorities of the organization, and whether they truly stand for inclusivity and diversity. I can only imagine how frustrating and disheartening it must be for Amandla Stenberg and other black actors in the Star Wars universe to face such treatment without any support from those who have the power to make a difference. It is not just about one person or one incident, but about creating an environment where everyone feels valued, respected, and safe. This is not the audience I want Lucasfilm to pander to, and it is time for them to take action and denounce this behavior unequivocally.

It’s clear that a group of individuals, who are supposedly “fans,” bombarded Amandla Stenberg’s social media with harsh comments due to the show’s cancellation. This behavior is incredibly harmful and unacceptable on any digital platform. We can only speculate how the young actress handled these offensive messages, some of which were crude and disrespectful, but we fervently hope she doesn’t give them undue attention, as such comments do not represent genuine Star Wars supporters.
Ultimately, let’s make it clear that these individuals are not genuine fans of Star Wars. Their actions do not align with authentic fandom and are not worthy of endorsement. Stenberg should never have to face such treatment, and we wholeheartedly condemn it. For the record, we stand firmly behind the young actress and wish her a prosperous career ahead!
