‘The Acolyte’ Could’ve Been Great Had Kathleen Kennedy Entrusted it to Another Female Director

As a seasoned gamer and Star Wars enthusiast with over three decades of immersion in this galaxy far, far away, I can confidently say that the controversy surrounding The Acolyte was a storm I wish never to encounter again. While I was initially excited about the Old Republic setting, the show’s unfortunate fate left me feeling more like an Ewok watching Alderaan’s destruction.

Among all Star Wars projects since Disney acquired Lucasfilm, none stirred up as much debate as The Acolyte. While various Star Wars projects have faced fan criticism, none has elicited a response quite like this series, which sparked an intense backlash from self-proclaimed “true fans,” turning into something of a relentless hate campaign against the show.

It’s important to note that, contrary to fan expectations, “The Acolyte” will not be returning for a second season from Lucasfilm after eight episodes. While we can’t change the fact that it’s been canceled, let’s discuss potential ways it could have been improved.

As a die-hard Star Wars fan and gamer, I was really hyped for “The Acolyte”. The concept sounded promising, hinting at a series that could bridge the gap between the Old Republic era and the Prequel Trilogy. But unfortunately, it didn’t quite deliver as expected. In retrospect, I believe the potential of this show could have been better realized if Kathleen Kennedy had handed the reins to another talented female director instead of Leslye Headland.

Regarding the series “The Acolyte,” Lucasfilm put considerable resources into its production and promotion, hoping it would match the popularity of shows like “The Mandalorian” or “Ahsoka.” The aim was to produce an impactful prequel, but before its debut, some toxic fans criticized it due to its diverse cast and leading female characters. Remarks made by the cast and crew, which occasionally fueled these fans’ criticism, further aggravated the situation. This led to a unprecedented wave of hate speech and review bombing. However, the show’s cancellation was not because of this backlash, but due to its own numerous issues.

However, instead of assigning blame to multiple individuals, it’s clear that Leslye Headland, in her role as showrunner, bears a significant responsibility for the current state of affairs. After all, she was tasked with ensuring the series would be successful, but instead, she engaged online with toxic fans and asserted ownership over the show. Unsurprisingly, this approach did not resonate positively with everyone.

Concurrently, we find ourselves pondering: might “The Acolyte” have been even more exceptional? To clarify, assuming the same cast, characters, and storyline, could it have been improved? We believe so. The approach that Kathleen Kennedy and Lucasfilm could have taken is – Bryce Dallas Howard!

As a passionate gamer, I can’t help but be excited about the potential of a popular Hollywood figure stepping into the world of Star Wars. This actress-turned-director has already made a name for herself with episodes of The Mandalorian that have left fans in awe. With such success under her belt, it’s no wonder that many of us are clamoring for Lucasfilm to consider her for a movie or even her own series. After all, she seems to truly grasp the essence of this franchise and knows exactly how to create something extraordinary.

If Howard had been involved in the show, it’s likely that the original concept and characters would have remained, but many of the problems that the series faced under Headland might have been addressed. Given Howard’s past work, we are confident that she could have created a more engaging and consistent series. Sadly, it seems that such an intriguing project as The Acolyte didn’t reach its full potential, and instead of flourishing, it disintegrated when a potentially superior alternative was available.
