‘That’s A Movie Star’: Mark Harmon Recalls Casting Austin Stowell On NCIS: Origins

As a long-time fan of NCIS, witnessing the evolution of the franchise through the years has been nothing short of exhilarating. The introduction of NCIS: Origins, with the young Gibbs being portrayed by none other than Austin Stowell, feels like a dream come true for me.

One well-known and memorable show is NCIS. Now, the family of this popular series has broadened its universe with a new spin-off series called NCIS: Origins. The original actor who played Leroy Jethro Gibbs, Mark Harmon, also participated in choosing the younger version of his character. In the end, he picked Austin Stowell to play the role in the spinoff series.

In my conversation with People magazine, I, as a seasoned actor, admitted feeling a noticeable surge in the room’s energy when Stonwell made his entrance before uttering a word. Harmon added, “He walked out and someone exclaimed, ‘I can’t help but say it, he’s a true movie star.’

In the latest show, Harmon takes on a role as both executive producer and narrator, and even makes an on-screen debut in the premiere episode. This is noteworthy because it marks his first screen appearance as Gibbs since he parted ways with the series back in 2021.

Stowell communicated with the media outlet, too, and hinted at not taking part in such a series. On the other hand, Harmon discussed the intense competition for the role. He stated that there were numerous talented individuals, but only a handful stood out as much as Austin did.

The actor commented that, given how the series’ roles were successively filled, he could make such a statement for any character since they came on board one after another, securing their preferred choices for each part.

Harmon expressed to the media outlet, “More often than not, when you present an idea or discuss something or envision something, the presentation on air significantly deviates from the original plan.” He added that it’s quite unusual for things to be carried out as anticipated, and so far, this project has turned out pretty much as they had expected.

Stonewell offers praise for Harmon and the cast and crew of the show as well. In discussing his role as the lead, which provided employment for the team in Hollywood, he expresses enjoyment towards this “role” or “task”.

The performer expressed that his job holds immense significance for him, not just for personal gain, but as a collective experience with everyone involved. He referred to it as an extraordinary opportunity that he deeply cherishes. Furthermore, he acknowledged the 300 million fans of the show who eagerly anticipate the performance, which served as additional motivation for him, encouraging him to strive even harder and ensure their expectations are met.
