Terminator’s Back From The Dead (and Making Bank!)

Initially, Terminator: Dark Fate failed to captivate audiences in cinemas, with critics and enthusiasts finding it less than satisfying. However, now it has made a comeback and is turning a profit.

During discussions about his involvement in the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s X-Men reboot, director Tim Miller recently looked back on his Terminator film, Dark Fate. He noted that although the movie didn’t initially perform well financially when it was first released, it has since made a profit.

Even though [Dark Fate] wasn’t as financially successful at the time, it’s in the black now.

The 2019 movie had an initial investment of approximately $185 million, yet it only grossed around $261 million worldwide, falling far short of recouping its costs when accounting for marketing expenses and studio shares. This film was often referred to as a flop during its release.

Mediocre Reviews Didn’t Help

The response was generally moderate all around. Critics assigned Dark Fate a 70% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, whereas fans gave it an 82%, which is satisfactory, though it falls short compared to the accolades garnered by earlier installments such as T2.

Longstanding fans of the Terminator series found themselves at odds over the movie’s trajectory as well, particularly since the franchise was attempting to steer itself back on track following several unsuccessful restart attempts.

The Plot

Judgment Day, disregarding the happenings in the subsequent sequels.

The narrative focuses on Dani Ramos, a factory worker from Mexico City, who becomes the latest target of a lethal new Terminator model known as Rev-9. Arriving from the future to safeguard her is Grace, a combination of human and cybernetic organism. Dani joins forces with Sarah Connor and a reprogrammed T-800, resurrecting franchise mainstays Linda Hamilton and Arnold Schwarzenegger.

It Took a While, But It Paid Off

Given that the movie didn’t do well at the box office, it seems likely that its current profitability stems from additional earnings through streaming agreements, licensing, and foreign sales, as suggested by Miller when he mentioned that “Terminator: Dark Fate” has become profitable.

Just as with DC’s “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom,” the movie underperformed at the box office, however, Warner Bros. has since announced that it proved successful in home entertainment sales instead.

What’s next for Terminator?

Despite the fact that Terminator: Dark Fate has been deemed successful, this doesn’t automatically guarantee a follow-up film will be produced.

The current news indicates that last year, James Cameron disclosed his participation in a clandestine Terminator project.

Fans can also play as the Terminator in Mortal Kombat.

Netflix also released the Terminator Zero anime last year.
