Ted Wheeler, often seen on the sidelines while his children battle supernatural threats, has mostly remained oblivious to the dangers facing Hawkins since the very beginning of Stranger Things. While viewers appreciate his dry humor and calm demeanor, many are hoping to see him become more involved in the action. In a recent interview with TopMob, actor Joe Chrest suggested that Ted Wheeler might finally take a more active role in the upcoming fifth season, potentially stepping up to fight alongside the others.

Everyone recognizes the classic, somewhat detached dad from the 1980s. Ted Wheeler from Stranger Things perfectly embodies that type. He’s been present throughout the entire series, managing to stay somewhat removed from the central action. With the upcoming release of Stranger Things 5, we spoke with the actor who plays Ted, Chrest, to find out what’s next for this beloved, sarcastic character.
According to showrunner Chrest, viewers who have been following the series and Ted Wheeler specifically can expect a significant surprise this season, potentially even a shocking one. While Chrest remained tight-lipped about details, they hinted at clues about what’s to come. Given Ted’s previously reserved and detached demeanor in Stranger Things 5, a more prominent and involved role would likely be the biggest shock for fans.
Fans have been buzzing about what the Wheelers will be up to in season five, including questions about Holly and Karen. Recently, Netflix partnered with Target for a promotional campaign for the new season, and according to Chrest, that campaign might contain clues about Ted’s involvement in Stranger Things 5.
In this short clip, we see Ted relaxing on the couch, channel surfing as usual. But there are a couple of odd moments. We briefly see the Mind Flayer on the TV screen, and then Ted looks up as magnets fall off the fridge. If Chrest’s theory is correct and these are hints, could this mean Ted is starting to become aware of the Upside Down’s impact in the fifth season of Stranger Things?
It seems intentional that Chrest was selected for this campaign. It makes you wonder why him specifically. Considering nothing happens randomly, I suspect this could hint at a larger role for Ted in Stranger Things 5, potentially connecting him to events he’s been unaware of until now.
Will Ted Wheeler Die in Season Five of Stranger Things?

The biggest question fans have about Ted Wheeler in the fifth season is whether he’ll die. Many theories suggest danger for Ted, Holly, and Karen, especially because the second part of the season is titled “The Vanishing of Holly Wheeler.” Some believe Ted might even sacrifice himself to save Holly, which would be a surprising and heroic moment.
Does the recent evidence strongly suggest Ted Wheeler will have a more significant part to play in Stranger Things 5? It seems likely, doesn’t it? After all, it would be unusual for a character to remain so oblivious for an entire five seasons. While the creators might still surprise us, many fans, including myself, believe season five will finally see Ted step up and fight against the forces of the Upside Down.
Stranger Things 5, Volume 1, releases on November 26 at 5 PM PT/8 PM ET.
