Simu Liu, known for his role in Shang-Chi, surprised his fiancée, Allison Hsu, with a special gift from Taylor Swift after proposing to her in Paris. He shared on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon that he’d asked Swift to send a congratulatory video to Hsu.
Liu mentioned his fiancée is a big Taylor Swift fan – she’s a digital marketing executive in the music industry and grew up loving Taylor’s music. He added that Swift’s songs were significant when they first started dating.
Getting to know Taylor through her music was a significant part of how our relationship started, and understanding what those songs meant to her was really important.
Liu hoped a personal message from Taylor Swift would make the engagement even more memorable. He explained, “I figured there was one person who could really make this special, so I contacted Taylor—we’ve met a couple of times, and she’s amazing—through her publicist. I asked if she might be willing to record a quick, two-second congratulatory video.”
She sent it to me just two days later, and I got to play it for her. Having Taylor Swift involved was the perfect finishing touch.
Hsu was very touched by the video. Liu remembered, “She was already quite emotional, but when I showed her the video, she broke down completely.”
On May 11th, the couple shared the news of their engagement on Instagram. Liu described Taylor Swift as “absolutely fantastic” and “so nice and sweet.” Both Liu and Hsu have been fans of the singer for a long time.
Liu has posted about going to Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour with Hsu, and even playfully mentioned both Hsu and Travis Kelce in a Valentine’s Day Instagram post following the Super Bowl, showing they all enjoy Swift’s music.

While hosting the 2024 People’s Choice Awards, Liu Yifei revealed she’s been a Taylor Swift fan for years. She playfully referenced Swift’s Eras Tour movie, joking, “I was a Swiftie before I was Ken, just to be clear where my loyalties lie! Being a child of 1989, Taylor and I have a lot in common.”
