Quentin Tarantino has said that his least favorite character of all the ones he’s written is Calvin Candie from Django Unchained. He shared this on the ReelBlend podcast.
Quentin Tarantino often creates villains who are both complex and surprisingly likable. Characters like Hans Landa in Inglourious Basterds and the Deadly Vipers from Kill Bill are memorable because they combine wickedness with a certain charm. Even Hans Landa, brilliantly portrayed by Christoph Waltz, possessed traits that Tarantino found somewhat relatable.
But Calvin Candie, played by Leonardo DiCaprio, was different.
Tarantino shared that he had a strange connection to the character Calvin Candie, and that he generally feels some sympathy for all of his villains. He admitted to even liking them to a degree, explaining that he could understand their perspectives – even someone like Hans Landa. He believes Christoph Waltz’s performance makes even the villainous characters relatable.
Quentin Tarantino struggled to create a compelling character in Calvin Candie. He admitted to disliking Candie intensely while writing him, even to the point of feeling it as a writer. Ultimately, Tarantino considered Candie a weak character because of this disconnect.
Tarantino was initially surprised by how enthusiastic and committed Leonardo DiCaprio was to the role. He even confessed to wondering if DiCaprio was overestimating the character’s quality. Tarantino jokingly admitted he didn’t want to disabuse the actor of that notion, thinking to himself, “He really thinks this character is great!”
DiCaprio took the character to another level. He added layers of complexity and nuance that weren’t originally in the script. According to Tarantino, the character was initially quite straightforward, but DiCaprio’s performance skillfully introduced ambiguity, making him more compelling. Tarantino explained, “He was without ambiguity to me, which makes him a lesser character. But, we did a really good job of filling in everything. And Leo brought ambiguity to the piece.”
