Quentin Tarantino recently revealed he dislikes actor Owen Wilson, despite enjoying one of Wilson’s popular films. On The Bret Easton Ellis Podcast, Tarantino stated bluntly, “I really can’t stand Owen Wilson. I mean, I can’t stand him.”
Even though Tarantino initially felt strongly about the film, his opinion changed after seeing Midnight in Paris several times.
He described his changing feelings about a character in the movie. Initially, he loved the film but disliked the character, even thinking, ‘Don’t be such a [negative term].’ But on a second viewing, he began to understand the character more, realizing he wasn’t so bad. By the third time he watched it, he found himself actually rooting for him.
I absolutely adore Midnight in Paris – it’s a Woody Allen film from 2011 that just captures a certain magic. It’s about a screenwriter named Gil, played by Owen Wilson, who’s feeling really lost, both in his work and in his relationship with his fiancée (Rachel McAdams, who plays a bit of a materialistic character). But then, the coolest thing happens: every night, he somehow gets transported back to Paris in the 1920s! He meets all these incredible artists and writers, and it really makes him rethink everything about his life. It’s a really charming and thought-provoking film.
Okay, so this movie has a seriously impressive cast – Kathy Bates, Adrien Brody, Carla Bruni, even Tom Hiddleston! Plus, you’ve got Corey Stoll, Alison Pill, Lea Seydoux, Marion Cotillard, and Michael Sheen all in one film. I remember hearing about it when it first premiered at Cannes back in 2011, and then it hit U.S. theaters that May. It was a big deal!
The film was a critical success and received several major awards in 2012, including the Academy Award and Golden Globe for Best Original Screenplay. It was also nominated for prestigious awards in categories like Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Art Direction.
Despite not liking Owen Wilson as a person, Quentin Tarantino acknowledges Wilson’s talent and enjoyed his performance in the movie. This demonstrates that it’s possible to separate an actor from their work and still appreciate a good performance.
