Summary
- Gustaf Westman is releasing a 12-piece collection with IKEA on September 20
- Named “Vinterflint”, it is designed for holiday entertaining and includes plates, cups, and lighting
Ever since I set up my game design studio back in 2020, transitioning from architecture, I’ve been crafting a distinct, chunky style that’s resonating globally, building quite the enthusiastic following along the way.
In his studio situated in Stockholm, he is recognized for his distinctive style in homeware design, which involves crafting large-scale items such as extra-large coffee mugs and saucers, plump dinner plates, and oversized wine glasses, available in a variety of colors.
Currently, the Swedish designer is preparing for an exciting event he terms as realizing a “lifelong ambition” – his initial collaboration with IKEA.
When news about their partnership surfaced this summer, it felt like a dream come true not only for Westman but for many others as well. Following glimpses of the initial creation from the collection, dubbed the “Meatball Plate,” it was hard to avoid repeatedly encountering it online.
Now, they’re releasing the full 12-piece collection.
As part of IKEA’s winter collection, “Vinterfint,” for the year, this special, limited-edition range adds a fun twist to holiday home decor. Westman expressed a desire to move away from the traditional looks typically associated with the festive season – “My designs don’t align with the conventional Christmas aesthetic in Scandinavia, which made me apprehensive,” he shares. “Instead, collaborating with IKEA, we developed a concept centered around celebration and entertaining.
Besides the essential meatball serving dish, you can expect porcelain plates, cups, candle holders, and lighting to complement the setup. The color scheme is a blend of Westman’s usual tones with a touch of seasonality – it includes green and red as expected, but there’s also some bubble gum pink and baby blue added in.
Maria O’Brian, Creative Leader at IKEA of Sweden, expressed enthusiasm about investigating a more lively and welcoming spin on traditional celebrations, stating, “We felt partnering with Gustaf Westman was a fitting alliance to breathe new life into the holidays with a fresh perspective. Westman’s colorful and inventive style aligns well with IKEA’s aesthetic, yet he also pushes boundaries in an exciting, daring manner.
Partnering with Westman represents a strategic decision by IKEA. Based in Stockholm, this designer has consistently leveraged content effectively to take his designs to international acclaim on a global stage.
At a period when a fresh wave of interior enthusiasts was arising, he appeared on the scene with his striking design style characterized by vibrant colors and large forms, which has become a common element in numerous influencers’ homes. Despite his widespread popularity, this partnership aims to broaden access to Westman’s work: “We’re delighted to make this dynamic designer’s work more reachable for a larger public,” O’Brian mentions.
Prices for items in this collection vary, with tealight holders priced at £4 GBP and large plates costing £29 GBP. Starting on September 19, IKEA Family members can take advantage of special pre-sale events in select stores to purchase the collection. The collection will be accessible for all customers in IKEA stores from September 20.
