Takashi Yamazaki Reveals He Got a Lot of Offers to Direct Other Films After the Success of ‘Godzilla Minus One’

As a die-hard Godzilla fan, I couldn’t help but feel a surge of excitement watching Takashi Yamazaki at the “Godzilla Festival 2024”. His passion for the King of Monsters was palpable, and his modest demeanor only added to the anticipation for the new film.

At the “Godzilla Festival 2024” held in Hibiya, Tokyo, Takashi Yamazaki, director of the upcoming movie ‘Godzilla Minus One’ (2023), shared his excitement for the new Godzilla film during a discussion at “Izakaya Godzilla”. The production of this film was officially announced yesterday.

At the “Godzilla Fest,” where the talk show is now a common event, there was an immediate outburst of excitement as Director Yamazaki stepped onto the stage. Greeted with cries of “Takara,” Director Yamazki declared that they will be filming a new Godzilla movie, causing the crowd to cheer and applaud enthusiastically.

In a modest grin, Director Yamazaki shared, “I regret to inform you I can’t disclose any further details about our upcoming movie.” Glancing across the audience, he continued, “It’s heartening to witness such enthusiasm. It brings me joy that there are so many young spectators here. Over time, Godzilla has evolved into a beloved figure among adults. So, it’s encouraging to see more children among his fans and to know that the next generation is taking an interest in him, which bodes well for Godzilla’s future.

Instead, he amused the fans by remarking, “Godzilla-1.0 turned out better than expected, but numerous obstacles have arisen since then. Frankly, I can’t help feeling this might be my toughest challenge yet.” Yet, he continued with excitement for the upcoming film, “I’ll give it my all!

During the conversation, he mentioned that following the triumph and favorable response to “Godzilla 1.0”, he began receiving numerous enticing film proposals. He went on to say, “I’m sorry, but I can’t disclose the details of those offers. I declined them, shedding tears of blood, as they were planning a fresh Godzilla movie.

Moreover, clips from their visit to New York Comic Con in America were displayed, as well as exclusive footage from that event. Director Yamazaki fondly recalled the enthusiasm of overseas fans during the screening of Godzilla 1.0, stating, “The audience over there appeared to adore the parachute scene. They rose to their feet and became quite animated.

He also smiled as he recalled the overseas reaction, saying, “It seems they also like steady fighting styles like Operation Wadatsumi. Even the president of Marvel told me that. He said, ‘We all have meetings every day about whether we can create a plot development like that.’”

Additionally, video clips featuring Kamiki Ryunosuke and Hamabe Minami, who played in “Godzilla 1.0,” were aired. In these clips, Kamiki shared that Yamazaki had severe seasickness during filming and also mentioned that Anno Hideaki, the director of “Shin Godzilla” (2016), dropped by the set. Reflecting on his interactions with Anno, Yamazaki smiled and commented, “He’d instruct things like, ‘Lengthen that cut a bit,’ and say, ‘It’s not your scene. Take ownership.’ That’s what a director does.

The director revealed more secrets from the set and hinted about the upcoming Godzilla movie, stating, “It might take a while, but I’ll strive to create a Godzilla film even better than Godzilla-1.0, so keep an eye out for it! Thank you!” The crowd erupted in applause, with host Shinsuke Kasai urging, “Good luck, Taka!
