Taika Waititi Says His STAR WARS Movie Will Be Fun With High Stakes

Back in 2020, Taika Waititi announced he was developing a Star Wars movie. After years of silence and dwindling hope among fans, Lucasfilm’s outgoing president, Kathleen Kennedy, recently hinted the project wasn’t dead. She described Waititi’s script as funny and said it’s “still somewhat alive.” Waititi himself has shared that he aims to recapture the exciting, fun spirit of the original Star Wars films.

As a huge movie fan, I always loved that those films managed to balance really intense, high-stakes drama with a ton of fun. That’s what I was aiming for with my work. I wanted to create something that felt separate enough from everything already happening in that universe, something with its own unique vibe. They’ve already got so much going on, and I figured to really contribute, I needed to do my own thing.

Waititi didn’t share many specifics about his upcoming film, but he did mention his favorite Star Wars villain – Darth Vader, which is exactly who most people would have guessed.

Darth Vader is such a compelling villain because he embodies a child’s deepest fear: the idea of a parent betraying them and becoming unreachable. Films like Invasion of the Body Snatchers tap into that same fear, and zombies are effective villains for similar reasons. They represent loved ones who are unrecognizable and pose a threat, playing on the fear of losing connection with those closest to you.

With Dave Filioni and Lynwen Brennan now leading Lucasfilm, fans are hoping they’ll move forward with Taika Waititi’s planned Star Wars movie.
