As a long-time admirer of Taika Waititi‘s unique storytelling and offbeat humor, it’s been quite the rollercoaster ride watching his career unfold. From the hilarious antics of “What We Do in the Shadows” to the cosmic spectacle of “Thor: Ragnarok,” I’ve been thoroughly entertained. But lately, it seems like the God of Thunder has lost his thunder, with a series of projects hitting developmental purgatory.
What We Do in the Shadows enjoyed moderate success, but it didn’t quite break into mainstream popularity. However, with films like Thor: Ragnarok and Jojo Rabbit, director Taika Waititi rapidly climbed the ladder to stardom and became one of the most wanted directors globally. This sudden surge in popularity was truly remarkable for him.
Since that time, however, his professional journey has been on a declining path. The movie “Thor: Love and Thunder” didn’t fare well, while “Next Goal Wins” was enjoyable yet lacked significant impact. “Our Flag Means Death,” despite its success, hasn’t brought Waititi back to the level of acclaim he once held.
Given the circumstances, it appears that progress on three significant upcoming productions – a live-action reinterpretation of the timeless anime Akira, a fresh approach to the Star Wars saga, and a revival of the beloved Flash Gordon franchise – has stalled and seems stuck in a creative limbo. To put it simply, they’re in developmental purgatory, as we understand it. Lately, the director himself has shared some insights regarding these projects.
The trio of projects were exceptionally grand in scale.
Speaking as a dedicated Star Wars fan, I can’t help but feel exhilarated when I think about Taika Waititi’s potential project. The announcement came after his triumphant stint in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the surge of excitement surrounding Star Wars at that time. His success, particularly his voice work as IG-11 and IG-12 in The Mandalorian, ignited speculation about him directing his own Star Wars movie, a film that promised a unique perspective… if it had ever come to fruition. Regrettably, at this point, things have remained quiet on that front, with Lucasfilm seemingly redirecting their focus. The fate of this project remains uncertain for now.
To wrap it up, the revamped version of the classic ’80s film, Flash Gordon, is still in limbo. Despite being criticized as low-quality by some, it has a dedicated fanbase who adore it. At one point, Waititi was associated with an animated reboot, but that project has since been abandoned and transformed into a live-action remake. However, progress on that front has also stalled. Given the unpredictable nature of Waititi’s career, it remains uncertain what will become of these projects in the future.
In relation to this, the team from The Playlist’s Bingeworthy podcast inquired about various upcoming projects of Taika Waititi during an interview centered around his current work, Interior Chinatown. Here’s a summary of his responses:
“What once lived and what is death? Well, think of it as a fresh beginning, another chance for growth and prosperity. Life is an ongoing process. As for my advice to any filmmaker, I say seize every opportunity. Things can be fleeting, and you never know where you stand with projects. I’ve been involved with things that seemed to vanish only to reappear years later. It’s like I thought those projects were long gone, but suddenly, I have to jump back in.”
