Syril’s Bed Meltdown: The Funniest Star Wars Moment Ever

When it comes to Star Wars, there’s no single, universally agreed-upon best thing, be it a character, spaceship, planet or event. With countless tales spread across movies, TV shows, books, comics, video games, and other forms of media, everyone has their own favorite and valid perspective. Therefore, claiming an undisputed number one in Star Wars is challenging due to the vast array of options and individual viewpoints.

Another fact I’ve learned about Star Wars is that the most hilarious moment in its entire history occurs when sad Syril is found lying on his bed in Andor season two.

We unequivocally should never side with Syril Karn, a man who appears to favor fascism and blindly follows authority. He does not merit our compassion or empathy. Instead, he’s an individual who aligns himself with wrongdoers and engages in harmful activities. The only appropriate response for someone as contemptible as him is cosmic retribution for his transgressions against the universe.

However, this doesn’t imply our approval for such actions. In episode three of Andor‘s second season, Syril underwent a punishment that most would find unbearable. He was put in an awkward position when he had to introduce his mother to his girlfriend. This moment was so uncomfortable and distressing that it allowed us to understand, even if briefly, the loathing we feel for him. It became clear how exhausting it is for even Syril to cope with Eedy’s passive-aggressive behavior. As Shakespeare put it, “Though she be small, she is fierce.” Her quiet anger, expressed through subtle smiles, comes in the form of biting words filled with disapproval, disappointment, and the kind of judgment only a loving mother can inflict.

The bizarre fondue dinner itself was amusing enough to keep us entertained, but what followed took it to an entirely different level – or perhaps, it brought things crashing down. To be specific, it ended up on Syril and Dedra’s bed, where Kyle Soller’s dramatic collapse was pure comedy gold. With no movement at all, he managed to express a lifetime of frustration and annoyance that Syril had felt towards his mother. Here was a man who was never content in his personal life or professionally successful, and within minutes, with a few well-placed jabs, his mother had bested him yet again.

Redefining the sentiment: It was particularly amusing that Syril, who tried to project an image of a stern, powerful Imperialist, ended up being hilarious in this scenario. If we had liked Syril, seeing him in such a predicament would have been upsetting because we’d sympathize with a character we admire. Instead, his repulsive desire to be a fascist made it enjoyable to watch his mother tear into his self-worth, even though it was relatable and human. In fact, witnessing her dismantle his soul provided an unusual kind of pleasure due to Syril’s unlikable nature as a wannabe dictator.

In many aspects, we admire Eedy Karn from the vast cosmos, and perhaps nothing more so than her expertise in a matter that intrigues us all – dealing with Sad Syril’s son. She’s a master at making him unhappy, which was indeed amusing to witness. However, some may argue that Sad Syril’s silent fall onto his bed is the most humorous moment in the entire Star Wars saga. Yet, I must clarify that according to my knowledge of the franchise, there’s no such title bestowed upon a single moment as being funnier than the rest. It’s subjective and impossible to objectively declare any one instance as the funniest in the galaxy.

But yeah, Sad Syril lying on his bed is definitely the funniest moment in Star Wars history.

Mikey Walsh, one of our staff writers at TopMob, was compelled to halt the episode due to uncontrollable laughter during this particular scene.
