John Rambo Explores the Beginning of the Character
The latest John Rambo movie tells the story of how the legendary soldier became who he is, showing his life before the events of the original First Blood film. Noah Centineo plays Rambo in this origin story, taking on the role made famous by Sylvester Stallone.
I’m really excited about Jalmari Helander’s new take on Rambo. He’s talked about it as a very realistic survival story, focusing on what made Rambo the way we all know him – the experiences that forged him, both emotionally and physically. It’s not just action, it’s about understanding his whole journey, and that’s what’s got me hooked, especially coming from the director of films like Sisu and Rare Exports.
The filmmaker has emphasized that the film will take a stripped-down approach to the character.
When the project was first revealed, Helander described it as a gritty and authentic take on the classic Rambo story – a tale of survival, determination, and the loss of childhood innocence.

A New Era for the Rambo Franchise
Stallone’s involvement also gives fans confidence that the person who originally created the character will still help guide the series going forward, despite not appearing in the new movie.
I still remember when the first First Blood came out in 1982 – it was incredible! It really kicked off what became one of the most famous action series ever, and seeing Stallone as Rambo over five movies has been amazing. The last one, Rambo: Last Blood, came out in 2019, and it was a fitting end to the story, though I’ll always love the original!
Now that filming for the new John Rambo movie has begun, with Sylvester Stallone as an executive producer, the story aims to both honor the character’s origins and introduce him to a new audience.
