Sydney Sweeney To Join Live-Action Gundam?

According to recent reports, it appears that Sydney Sweeney, known for her role in Euphoria, is close to signing on for a part in the upcoming Gundam live-action film being developed by Legendary Entertainment. The specifics of Sweeney’s character have not been revealed yet, and the studio has chosen not to discuss the casting at this time, as stated by Deadline.

The upcoming Gundam movie, jointly developed by Legendary and Bandai Namco Filmworks, is set to be helmed by Jim Mickle, known for his work on Sweet Tooth. Apart from directing, he’s also penning the script. Mickle will collaborate with his partner Linda Moran in producing the film under their production company, Nightshade. The project has been underway since 2021 when Legendary initially revealed plans to transform the renowned mecha anime franchise into a live-action movie. Initially, Jordan Vogt-Roberts (Kong: Skull Island) was appointed as the director, but Mickle later took over the project.

The anime franchise known as Gundam, which was brought to life by Yoshiyuki Tomino, is one of the most impactful in the history of animation. It first appeared on screens in 1979 under the title Mobile Suit Gundam. This series played a crucial role in launching the “mecha” sci-fi subgenre, which centers around colossal robots controlled by humans and is often set within intricate war storylines. Since then, the franchise has branched out to numerous anime series, movies, video games, and an extensive range of merchandise that generates approximately $600 million per year.

Gundam, initially created by Yoshiyuki Tomino in 1979 as Mobile Suit Gundam, is a groundbreaking anime franchise that popularized the “mecha” sci-fi subgenre. This genre revolves around large, piloted robots and complex war narratives. Over the years, the franchise has expanded to various anime series, films, video games, and merchandise, generating an impressive annual revenue of over $600 million.

Sweeney’s possible role further expands her impressive list of film projects. This talented actress has recently shone in the horror sensation Immaculate and Ron Howard’s Eden, which made its debut at TIFF. Upcoming appearances include Apple’s Echo Valley (premiering on June 13), the Christy Martin boxing biopic (still untitled), Season 3 of Euphoria, The Housemaid, and Colman Domingo’s Scandalous!.

As a devoted admirer, if this role comes to fruition, it would signify my debut in the realm of blockbuster franchises based on major titles. The Gundam movie, being the initial live-action rendition of the adored series, has sparked immense anticipation among fans, who are eagerly waiting to witness Mickle and Legendary’s interpretation of the iconic mecha universe on the silver screen.
