For her new movie, Christy, Sydney Sweeney fully committed to portraying boxing champion Christy Martin, and the role came with some real dangers.
The 28-year-old actress gained 30 pounds and underwent rigorous training in weightlifting and kickboxing to accurately portray Martin, a pioneering female boxer honored by the Nevada Boxing Hall of Fame. She was committed to convincingly capturing the fighter’s physical appearance and movements.
While promoting her new movie on WFAN Radio, Sydney Sweeney revealed that filming the boxing scenes was physically demanding, even causing her to suffer a concussion. She explained that she specifically asked her fight coordinator and stunt performers – some of whom were professional fighters – to actually hit her during the scenes. “I wanted to feel what it was like to be truly hit,” she said.
Sydney Sweeney revealed she actually threw and received real punches during filming for “Christy,” and ended up with a concussion. 😳

Sweeney emphasized the importance of authenticity in the fight scenes. She wanted to truly showcase Christy’s character and emotional journey during the matches, and that meant performing the stunts herself. She explained that using a stunt double or excessive editing would obscure Christy’s personality and the impact of the fights. Sweeney confirmed they actually made physical contact, resulting in realistic sounds and even a concussion, to achieve a raw and impactful portrayal.

Following the completion of filming in November 2024, Sydney Sweeney described the experience of making the Christy Martin biopic as deeply moving and life-changing in an Instagram post. She shared that Martin’s story is incredibly inspiring, and having Martin present on set was a surreal and supportive experience. Sweeney recounted often being overcome with emotion while filming, simply by looking over and seeing Martin watching and encouraging the cast and crew.
Sweeney shared, “This film is more than just entertainment; it’s a powerful story about overcoming hardship, surviving, and never giving up. I’m excited for everyone to see it, not just because I’m proud of the work I did, but because Christy’s incredible story needs to be heard. And while you’ll see me in some action-packed scenes, the real focus is on a story as strong and inspiring as the woman who lived it. This experience will stay with me always.”
