Sydney Sweeney Stands Firm, Refuses to Apologize for American Eagle Jeans Ad Despite Pressure

Sydney Sweeney isn’t backing down after receiving criticism for her recent American Eagle jeans advertisement. In an interview with GQ, she firmly stated she wouldn’t apologize, even when repeatedly asked about the controversy.

An advertising campaign called “Sydney Sweeney Has Great Jeans” caused an online backlash in July. Some people felt the wordplay connecting “jeans” and “genes,” combined with the use of a white woman with blonde hair and blue eyes, echoed harmful ideas related to eugenics and white supremacy.

In a GQ interview, Stoeffel questioned Sweeney about the unexpected attention, noting that Donald Trump had even tweeted about their jeans ad. Sweeney responded by calling the whole experience “surreal.”

Stoeffel wondered if Sweeney was concerned people might misinterpret her views. She asked if Sweeney worried about others forming opinions about her beliefs on certain topics. Sweeney responded confidently that she wasn’t worried, stating that when she feels strongly about something, she’s confident people will listen.

Sydney Sweeney is standing by her American Eagle jeans ad and won’t apologize for it, despite pressure from GQ’s Katherine Stoeffel. Stoeffel pointed out that even Donald Trump tweeted about the ad, which Sweeney acknowledged was a strange experience.

Look, the interviewer brought up this idea that some folks think it’s wrong for white people to make jokes about genetics, implying superiority. Honestly, I thought Amanda’s response was perfect. She basically said, ‘When I feel strongly about something, I will speak up.’ It’s about her having a voice and not being silenced, and I really respect that.

The campaign gained attention from several high-profile individuals, including White House communications director Steven Cheung, Vice President JD Vance, and President Donald Trump. When asked about it, Trump remarked, “If she’s a registered Republican, I love her ad! You’d be surprised how many Republicans there are… I think her ad is fantastic!”

Even though her actions have caused disagreement, Sweeney has stood firm and declined to apologize, maintaining that she will continue to express her views as she chooses.
