Sydney Sweeney Opens Up About Rapid 30-Pound Weight Loss for Character

Sydney Sweeney shared that her body experienced significant transformations during her training for and recovery from the boxing movie, Christy.

She told PEOPLE magazine about the physical changes she underwent for the role, explaining she first gained over 30 pounds and then had to lose it all again after filming wrapped.

The actress gained weight over several months by significantly changing her diet and starting a rigorous strength training program. She told PEOPLE she needed to eat a very large amount of food each day to convincingly portray boxer Christy Martin. She described eating ‘everything you could possibly imagine,’ constantly drinking protein shakes, and using creatine, which made her feel bloated.

After we finished filming, I had just seven weeks to get ready for two new jobs – The Housemaid and the next season of Euphoria. It meant I really had to focus on changing my body. I told them I needed to be super disciplined with myself, because I had to go from building muscle for one role to then losing it for these new ones. It was a quick turnaround!

Sydney Sweeney needed to lose 35 pounds quickly – in just seven weeks – for her role, as she immediately started filming ‘The Housemaid’ and ‘Euphoria’ afterward. She says the initial weight loss was easy, but getting rid of the final 10 pounds required a very strict diet and exercise plan.

She noticed her muscle mass decreased rapidly after she stopped her intense workouts and protein shakes. “As soon as I stopped training and having those shakes, the muscle went quickly,” she explained. “It disappears before any fat does, and I saw that happen within just two weeks.” Following that, she concentrated on a healthy diet and plenty of cardio to lose the remaining weight.

Honestly, seeing her transform like this was amazing, and she admitted it was a real challenge! But she also said her body is a machine – it bounces back quickly. She’s always been super active, which definitely helps. She’s lucky her metabolism works so well, letting her gain or lose weight when she needs to. Though, she seems like she might not want to go through that big of a change again, and I can’t say I blame her!

You can now see the film Christy in cinemas, and she’ll be appearing with Amanda Seyfried in The Housemaid, which comes out on December 19th.
