Sword Masters! Top 15 Superheroes Who Slay With Swords!

In Marvel and DC comics, weaponry from the Golden age and Silver age is quite a spectacle. Initially, superhero characters were influenced by traditional myths and figures from diverse cultures worldwide. This trend dwindled for a period, but in the 80s and 90s, sword-wielding heroes made a comeback. Today, these characters have ventured into various media forms, leading us to compile our list of the 15 most formidable superheroes who brandish swords in both DC and Marvel universes.

In our upcoming list, you’ll find characters who spend a good chunk of their storylines wielding swords. Since Superman’s sword is only featured sparingly in DC comics, it won’t make the cut. You might recognize some superheroes, but there will also be new faces to discover – perfect for broadening your superhero horizons! If you’re intrigued, stay tuned until the end!

1. El Aguila

We kick off our list with Alejandro Montoya, better known as El Aquila, who is an authentic master of the sword. While Marvel enthusiasts may not be overly familiar with this superhero, they’ll find him quite intriguing once they delve into his background. El Aguila made his debut in Power Man and Iron Fist #58 back in 1979. Initially introduced as a recurring foe to Power Man and Iron Fist, he was modeled after Zorro – yet another well-known figure from the world of fictional media.

Alejandro Montoya, also known as El Aguila or The Eagle, is a highly skilled fighter with expertise in fencing, acrobatics, and hand-to-hand combat. In the world of comics, he’s a Spanish mutant possessing the ability to generate electricity through his body, capable of discharging up to 100,000 volts via conductive metal. Unfortunately, this power was lost after “M-Day.” Despite this setback, Alejandro Montoya remains an intriguing figure, much like Zorro, making him a captivating character indeed.

2. Azrael

Moving from a Spanish superhero, let’s discuss Cristian vigilante Azrael. His identity has been assumed by various characters, but Jean-Paul Valley and Michael Lane are the most notable among them – the former being the original and the latter debuting in 2009. In DC comics, he is often portrayed as an antihero and a reluctant ally of Batman and his associates. His character certainly holds intrigue. To clarify, Azrael is a Christian vigilante and assassin operating in Gotham City, who was created by the Order of St. Dumas – a clandestine religious organization aiming to restore justice in Gotham by employing religious extremism.

After the Flashpoint incident, he has distinctive skills we’ll outline, focusing on those developed post-event. Equipped with the Suit of Sorrow, an advanced AI system, Azrael can pinpoint and attack vulnerabilities in his targets effectively. This suit is robust, offering both protection and bulletproof capabilities. Notably, this character also wields the Sword of Sin, a weapon, adding to his unique charm.

3. Travis Morgan / Warlord

Among the individuals listed, Travis Morgan, also known as Warlord, stands out as an exceptional swordsman. He not only employs the sword as a weapon at times, but it is his preferred choice for battle. The moniker “Warlord” was bestowed upon him due to his relentless efforts in safeguarding the liberty of the people residing in Skartaris, an enigmatic subterranean realm that can be accessed through the North Pole.

Originally introduced in DC comics back in 1975, the character known as Warlord has maintained a consistent presence within the comic’s narrative continuity. In truth, Travis Morgan was a pilot during the Vietnam War who stumbled upon an entrance while flying above the North Pole and unintentionally entered this enchanted subterranean realm. There, he resided and acquired mystical powers as well as mastery in the art of wielding his sword.

4. Psylocke

In our lists, we usually note when a superhero has multiple versions. However, Psylocke is an exception to this rule. Originally introduced in Marvel comics as Betsy Braddock back in 1976, Psylocke remained so until 1993, when her body was swapped with that of the assassin Kwannon. This event explained the character’s change in appearance within the comics. Later on, Betsy Braddock took up the role of Captain Britain.

Psylocke has been a part of groups such as Hellion, X-Men, The Hand, and Fallen Angels. Her story took an unexpected turn when she was killed off in 2001, only to be brought back to life in the Uncanny X-Men comic book series in 2005. This mutant human possesses psychic abilities like telepathy, telekinesis, and a unique skill that makes her stand out on this list – she can generate psionic blades. She is a fascinating character who has made appearances beyond comics, in various games, TV shows, animated series, and other forms of media.

5. Black Knight

In essence, Dane Whitman, also known as the Black Knight, is a character from Marvel Comics who seems to embody the spirit of mythical beings found in fantasy novels. However, it’s important to note that he isn’t the original Black Knight in the Marvel universe; that title was held by an evil character before him. Dane Whitman subsequently assumed the infamous enchanted sword and the title of the Black Knight to uphold honor. He made his debut in Marvel Comics back in 1967, and since then, he’s been a consistent member of teams such as the Avengers, Defenders, Ultraforce, MI-13, and Heroes for Hire.

The Black Knight is a highly proficient swordsman, close-combat warrior, master equestrian, physicist, and geneticist, possessing extraordinary senses and commanding various mystical weapons such as the Ebony blade or Sword of Light and Shield of Night. He made his appearance in the latest Marvel Cinematic Universe film, Eternals, with Kit Harington taking on the role.

6. Lady Sif

In the comic books, Lady Sif, who was once romantically involved with Thor and a trusted ally, is a formidable warrior of Asgard. Given her Asgardian heritage, it’s no wonder she’s included on this list; many Asgardians are adept at handling swords. Notably, Lady Sif excels in the use of not only swords but also various cold weapons. She boasts superhuman strength, durability, and endurance, among other abilities. Additionally, she is highly proficient in close-quarters combat.

Among the top-tier female fighters, she stands shoulder to shoulder with Valkyrie. With her upgraded sword at her side, she’s an incredibly formidable force. Frankly, we’re eagerly anticipating upcoming Marvel productions featuring her.

7. Hawkgirl

Hawkgirl, originally introduced among the initial set of DC characters, is particularly renowned, with Shiera Sanders Hall being one notable example. Alongside her eternal partner, Carter Hall (Hawkman), they have been revered as Earth’s guardians and are recognized as one of the most iconic duos in DC comic book lore.

Immortal and equipped with Nth metal, a unique resource that grants her wings for flight, increased strength, and an arsenal of weaponry including a sword, Hawkgirl stands as a formidable figure in the DC universe.

In this new storyline, Hawkgirl isn’t constantly wielding a sword like before, but she has alternatives due to her possession of Nth metal – one of the most potent materials in the DC universe – and other advanced artificial equipment. This versatility allows her to use swords alongside other weapons. Similarly, Hawkman also makes use of various weapons, particularly those styled after the Morning Star.

8. Nightcrawler

Kurt Wagner, also known as Nightcrawler, boasts a myriad of skills as a mutant, but his expertise in fencing and swordsmanship truly stands out. He wields two slender swords called rapiers, and with his knack for teleportation, blending into the shadows, and incredible agility in acrobatics, he’s an unparalleled force. Nightcrawler is one of the most recognized X-Men in Marvel Comics’ rich history, and he’s the son of Mystique, a complex character who straddles the line between hero and antihero.

He was portrayed in live-action multiple times and is an indispensable part of the X-Men group.

9. Wonder Woman

Diana Prince, popularly known as Princess Diana of Themyscira from comic books, is a highly influential character in the world of comics. She’s an Amazonian woman with extraordinary abilities, quick healing, and immortality, which also makes her one of the strongest superheroes in DC Comics.

One of the founding members of the Justice League is proficient in close-quarter combat, a skill that aligns with her Amazonian background. Her arsenal consists of a Truth Lasso, indestructible bracelets, throwable tiara, shield, invisible plane, and notably, a sword. She is among the earliest characters to appear in DC comics, and her sword is one of her most iconic tools; we’ll be seeing it back in action soon in the DCEU.

10. Deadpool

Wade Wilson is a multitalented character, known for his mischievous humor, extraordinary regenerative powers, and impressive physical strength. He possesses the ability to interact with the audience (breaking the Fourth Wall), boasts peak human speed, has conquered cancer, and is an expert assassin, among other skills. Originally conceived as a villain in the X-Force comics, Deadpool later evolved into an antihero and a source of comic relief. Typically working independently, he often disrupts other characters’ missions.

Among the formidable Marvel figures, Deadpool stands out as an exceptional sword-fighter, usually armed with two swords and leaving chaos in his wake wherever he goes. In one of his comic stories, Deadpool displayed a tender, stylish side when communicating with deaf Hawkeye through sign language. However, don’t underestimate the softness of Wade Wilson; when he’s brandishing swords, it’s best to make a hasty retreat!

11. Katana

As a die-hard movie fan, I’d put it like this: Among the ragtag team of Suicide Squad and The Outsiders, the one who catches my eye is Tatsu Yamashiro, better known as Katana. Just like her name suggests, she carries a katana—but not just any sword. This blade was crafted way back in the 14th century by Muramasa, a blacksmith famed for his cursed swords that could make even the wicked act more wickedly. But Katana’s sword, dubbed the Soul Taker, has a unique twist: it can capture and imprison the souls of the deceased within its blade. At times, the user of this enchanted weapon might even hear whispers from these trapped souls. Quite a handful for Batman’s special ops team, don’t you think?

Among the souls confined within her blade, Katana carries the spirits of her near relatives and her late husband, whom she occasionally communicates with. Skilled in martial arts and combat, it’s clear why Batman trusts her so deeply – crossing her would be a decision no one would want to make.

12. Valkyrie

Previously, we briefly touched upon Valkyrie during our discussion about Lady Sif. To put it mildly, Valkyrie is exceptionally skilled with her sword. In fact, her abilities are so impressive that Odin entrusted her to lead his elite squadron of shield-maidens. Her weapon, Dragonfang, is particularly noteworthy.

As a follower of Asgard’s mighty lineage, I possess extraordinary powers beyond those of mortals, yet it is my unique talents such as communicating with spirits of the deceased, mystical teleportation, and an unmatched resilience that truly set me apart. My weapon, Dragonfang, was forged by the enchanting Kahji-Da, a wizard skilled in the crafting of weapons from teeth of extra-dimensional dragons. This powerful blade found its way to the Ancient One before eventually ending up with Doctor Strange. In due course, Doctor Strange returned it to me, the Valkyrie, as I had returned the indestructible Ebony Blade to its rightful owner, the Black Knight. In the upcoming Thor film, you’ll be able to witness my valiant exploits once more.

13. Swordsman

Among the few characters, Jacques Duquesne, also known as The Swordsman, stands out as one who has been depicted both as a hero and a villain within comic book lore. His debut appearance was in Avengers volume 1 issue 19, back in 1965, where he initially served as an adversary to Hawkeye and the Avengers. Over time, however, Jacques Duquesne transformed into an ally of the Avengers, even assisting Hawkeye in refining his swordsmanship skills.

A swordsman, as the name implies, is an expert in the art of swordsmanship, possessing athletic abilities at par with Olympic level athletes, demonstrating strategic prowess, excelling in unarmed combat, and typically armed with multiple throwing knives and daggers among other weapons. Most recently, we encountered this skilled swordsman on Disney+ in a live-action series called Hawkeye, played by Tony Dalton. It’s plausible that the character of Swordsman could make further appearances within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) in the future.

14. Gamora

Originally introduced in 1975’s Strange Tales #180, Gamora has been a mainstay in Marvel comics ever since. Born as an adopted child to the powerful Titan Thanos and the last of her species, Gamora is no stranger to the pages of Marvel. She has been associated with groups such as the Guardians of the Galaxy, Infinity Watch, Phalanx, Graces, Nova Corps, and others. As a Titan, she possesses superhuman strength, agility, and combat skills that make her an exceptional assassin, martial artist, and swordswoman.

In the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), Zoe Saldana portrayed Gamora, a key figure in the Thanos narrative that ultimately led to her demise. Yet, it was revealed that an earlier version of Gamora had been retrieved from the past and remains a part of the Guardians of the Galaxy team, who we will rejoin later this year in MCU storylines.

15. Blade

Lastly, let’s not forget about Eric Brooks, also known as Blade – Marvel’s renowned vampire slayer and superhero. While he possesses a wide range of skills, it is his shotgun and dual swords that truly define him. He is proficient in martial arts, adept with swords, and boasts exceptional marksmanship. Additionally, he has heightened senses to detect vampire activities, superhuman abilities, and much more.

In the near future, we’ll be re-encountering him within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and let me tell you, our excitement for upcoming ventures like Marvel’s renowned vampire hunter is palpable!
