A fascinating link between the recently released film “Sinners” and the abandoned reboot of Marvel’s “Blade” is generating quite a buzz.
As a dedicated fan, I stumbled upon an interesting tidbit: It seems that the background actors in “Sinners” donned outfits originally crafted for the reboot of “Blade,” starring Mahershala Ali. Marvel Studios opted to pass these costumes on to the “Sinners” team since “Blade” was initially conceptualized as a period piece, thus making those costumes a perfect fit.
This was confirmed by Sev Ohanian in an interview with Screencrush.
In the cinematic universe, it’s often observed that costumes are recycled. However, this minor detail indicates a significant departure from the initial concept of a period piece in Marvel’s new take on Blade.
The bond runs quite profoundly. It’s worth noting that Ruth E. Carter, who designed the costumes for the movie Sinners, was also involved with the reboot of Blade prior to its termination. In an interview, she shared her thoughts on how both films shared similar backdrops, which allowed the costumes to be suitable for both ventures.
On the John Campea Show, Carter discussed further details about her part in the upcoming “Blade” reboot. According to her, Marvel’s new “Blade” movie was intended to be set during the 1920s. She had been gearing up for the film, but the project came to a halt due to the Hollywood strikes that occurred in 2023.
As she patiently waited for the next development, she received a call from the team of Ryan Coogler regarding work on the movie Sinners, another production set in the past.
Carter stated, “After extensively studying for this period drama involving a vampire – the story is indeed about Blade’s vampiric life,” he shared. “Ryan’s wife, Zinzi, who was also a producer on the project [Sinners], called me and said, ‘I won’t disclose the tale, but Ryan has a tale to share with you that… It is a period drama about vampires.’ I thought, ‘Since I’ve been immersed in that world for quite some time while preparing Blade, which unfortunately isn’t moving forward, let me listen to it.’
The story “Sinners” unfolds in the Mississippi Delta of the 1930s. It revolves around twin brothers Smoke and Stack, portrayed by Michael B. Jordan, as they engage in a battle against a group of vampires, with Jack O’Connell’s character, Remmick, at their head.
Carter expressed her shock upon learning that Coogler was working on a historical vampire movie immediately following the completion of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. The plotline aligns with whispers suggesting that the upcoming Blade film would primarily be set in the 1920s, featuring scenes from various eras.
In 2011, Marvel Studios reacquired the rights for the character Blade, following the conclusion of New Line Cinema’s trilogy. By 2013, Marvel had already begun developing a fresh take on this character. In 2019, Mahershala Ali, famous for his role as Cottonmouth in Luke Cage, expressed interest and eventually secured the part of Blade with Marvel Studios.
At San Diego Comic-Con towards the end of that year, the studio publicly declared Ali as Blade. He also made a brief voice appearance in the movie Eternals released in 2021. Unfortunately, the reboot encountered several setbacks, with numerous directors stepping in and out. By mid-2024, Eric Pearson was revising the script. However, in October 2024, Marvel took Blade off its release schedule.
The story was initially reported to concentrate on Blade’s daughter and to be set in the past, which was intriguing for some fans who were eager to witness more of Blade killing vampires. However, before director Yann Demange departed, the narrative was simply referred to as “just Blade slaying vampires.
Simultaneously, by early 2024, Ryan Coogler commenced production on “Sinners”, a period vampire film speculated to be set in the Jim Crow South during the 1900s. Michael B. Jordan is cast in the lead role, generating significant buzz among major studios. Warner Bros. secured distribution rights for the film with a budget approximating $100 million. Ultimately, the movie proved successful both with critics and audiences.
