Although James Gunn‘s interpretation of Superman does offer social commentary, it is clearly set in a fictional universe rather than reality. This isn’t to say that the Kryptonian hero, Green Lantern, or a flying dog are not part of this world, but rather that it differs significantly from our own. The key difference lies in the portrayal of the world’s wealthiest man, who in this movie is not portrayed as a complete fool.
Nicholas Hoult’s Lex Luthor may have been evil, but he was not modeled after a real person because he was depicted as exceptionally intelligent. He created his own pocket dimension, cloned Clark Kent, and discovered an excellent new donut shop. Remarkably, even as an adult, Luthor showed affection for the being he had created at the age of 12.
James Gunn has expressed that Mr. Handsome, the controversial character from Superman, might be his favorite character in the movie.
When someone inquires about my favorite character from #Superman, it could very well be Mr. Handsome. As a young boy of 12, Lex Luthor conceived Mr. Handsome in a Petri dish – an attempt to create a human being. He didn’t turn out perfectly, but there might not be anyone else in the world that Lex truly cares for…

The director of Superman, speaking on social media, revealed an unexpected favorite character from the movie that left fans guessing. It’s none other than Mr. Handsome, a peculiar, alien-esque character portrayed by Trevor Newling. This character might seem familiar due to its appearance in M. Night Shymalan’s Signs, but interestingly enough, Superman’s adversary created him during his teenage years. This intriguing backstory and the character’s unusual development over the years in the film Gunn wrote, have led to his fond affection for this seemingly unsuccessful character later on.
At twelve years old, Lex developed Mr. Handsome inside a Petri dish; it was an attempt to create a human being. The result wasn’t perfect, but there’s something about him that Lex feels deeply for, as shown by the photograph of him on his desk.
Though he didn’t shine particularly bright, there could be no other person in the world whom Lex truly cares for, as suggested by the picture on his desk. The role of our charming gentleman was skillfully played by Trevor Newlin.

We adore it just as we admire Mr. Handsome and his captivating backstory. We can’t help but appreciate Gunn’s candid shots of Newlin, who plays the pocket dimension ferryman, in full costume. These photos reveal the seemingly ordinary aspects of his life, such as having a drink or using the restroom.”
The key here is to maintain the original meaning and tone while using more natural and varied sentence structures and vocabulary.
In my perspective, Mr. Handsome wasn’t everything young Lex dreamed of. Yet, I couldn’t help but admire him for who he truly was. Frankly, I find the idea of perfection, even in a fictional tale, quite monotonous. It doesn’t take a genius to figure that out.
