Finding the right Superman under James Gunn’s direction wasn’t a walk in the park, but he might argue otherwise. After all, it was David Corenswet who won him over right from the start among roughly 400 contenders for the role. From then on, they formed an unstoppable duo. However, filming wasn’t always smooth sailing, as the director is rumored to have silenced the actor’s persistent barrage of questions on numerous occasions.
Superman: The Fight Between Two Hard-Headed Men? Think Again
In an interview with GQ, James Gunn stated that David Corenswet was constantly asking questions to ensure he delivered a top-notch performance as Clark Kent. He acknowledged the validity of these queries and their origin in a desire to learn, but admitted they could be overwhelming at times, particularly for someone as candid as himself. “Sometimes his questions are fantastic, and I can clearly see how they enhance his acting, and because they improve him, they make the movie better. But every now and then, it’s just one question too many, and it’s like, ‘Goodness me, David, please just stop for a moment.’
Was this incident perhaps strengthening the connection between the director and his leading actor? Definitely so, as the filmmaker expressed, it merely highlighted their relationship’s resilience and understanding. “What makes our dynamic special is that David understands himself, and he respects my boundaries.” This straightforward reply would likely be well-received by the actor.
In simpler terms, when I tell David to “stop talking,” he understands and doesn’t feel offended. His unique sensitivity as an actor can influence the chemistry on set, but with David, it’s different. He’s not overly sensitive off-screen, making our interactions smooth and productive.
In his debut with the DC Comics universe, Superman is James Gunn’s initial project, stepping into the shoes left by Zack Snyder. Early reactions have been favorable, and beginning this weekend, you can catch the movie in theaters!
